The Word of God

A Psalm

Psalm 118

1O give thanks to the Lord, for | he is | good;
his | mercy en | dures for | ever.

2Let Israel | now pro | claim,
‘His | mercy en | dures for | ever.’

3Let the house of Aaron | now pro | claim,
‘His | mercy en | dures for | ever.’

4Let those who fear the | Lord pro | claim,
‘His | mercy en | dures for | ever.’

5In my constraint I | calledto the | Lord;
the Lord | answered and | set me | free.

6The Lord is at my side; I | will not | fear;
what can | flesh | do to | me?

7With the Lord at my | sideas my | saviour,
I shall see the | downfall | of my | enemies.

8It is better to take | refugein the | Lord
than to put | any | confidence in | flesh.

9It is better to take | refugein the | Lord
than to put | any | confidence in | princes.

10All the | nations en | compassed me,
but by the name of the | Lord I | drove them | back.

11They hemmed me in, they hemmed me in on | every | side,
but by the name of the | Lord I | drove them | back.

12They swarmed about me like bees; they blazed like | fire among | thorns,
but by the name of the | Lord I | drove them | back.

13Surely, I was | thrustto the | brink,
but the | Lord | cameto my | help.

14The Lord is my | strengthand my | song,
and he has be | come | my sal | vation.

15Joyful | shoutsof sal | vation
sound | from the | tentsof the | righteous:

16‘The right hand of the Lord does mighty deeds; the right hand of the Lord | raises | up;
the right hand of the | Lord does | mighty | deeds.’

17I shall not | die, but | live
and de | clare the | worksof the | Lord.

18The Lord has | punished me | sorely,
but he has not | given me | over to | death.

19Open to me the | gates of | righteousness,
that I may | enterand give | thanksto the | Lord.

20This is the | gateof the | Lord;
the | righteous shall | enter | through it.

21I will give thanks to you, for | you have | answered me
and have be | come | my sal | vation.

22The stone which the | builders re | jected
has be | come the | chief | cornerstone.

23This is the | Lord’s | doing,
and it is | marvellous | in our | eyes.

24This is the day that the | Lord has | made;
we will re | joice | and be | glad in it.

25Come, O Lord, and | save us we | pray.
Come, Lord, | send us | now pros | perity.

26Blessed is he who comes in the | nameof the | Lord;
we | bless youfrom the | houseof the | Lord.

27The Lord is God; he has | given us | light;
link the pilgrims with cords | rightto the | hornsof the | altar.

28You are my God and | I will | thank you;
you are my | God and | Iwill ex | alt you.

29O give thanks to the Lord, for | he is | good;
his | mercy en | dures for | ever.

A Canticle

Which may be said here or between the readings

The Song of Isaiah

1 Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid.

2 for the Lord God is my strength and my might;
he has become my salvation.

3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;

4 Make known his deeds among the nations;
proclaim that his name is exalted.

5 Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
let this be known in all the earth.

6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen

One or two readings

The Gospel Canticle

Benedictus

1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.

2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.

3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,

4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.

5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.

6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.

7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.

10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen

Preparation

Penitence

All say

Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest pronounces the absolution.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

If no priest is present the absolution is omitted and the following prayer may be said:

Merciful Lord,
grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that we may be cleansed from all our sins,
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A Psalm

Psalm 78

1Hear my teaching, | O my | people;
incline your | earsto the | words of my | mouth.

2I will open my | mouthin a | parable;
I will pour forth | mysteries | from of | old,

3Such as we have | heard and | known,
which our | forebears | have | told us.

4We will not hide from their children, but will recount to gene | rations to | come,
the praises of the Lord and his power and the | wonderful | workshe has | done.

5He laid a solemn charge on Jacob and made it a | law in | Israel,
which he com | manded them to | teach their | children,

6That the generations to come might know, and the children | yet un | born,
that they in turn might | tell it | to their | children;

7So that they might put their | trust in | God
and not forget the deeds of | God, but | keephis com | mandments,

8And not be like their forebears, a stubborn and rebellious | gene | ration,
a generation whose heart was not steadfast, and whose spirit | was not | faithful to | God.

9The people of Ephraim, | armedwith the | bow,
turned | backin the | day of | battle;

10They did not keep the | covenant of | God
and re | fused to | walk in his | law;

11They forgot what | he had | done
and the | wonders | he had | shown them.

12For he did marvellous things in the | sight of their | forebears,
in the land of Egypt, | in the | field of | Zoan.

13He divided the sea and | let them pass | through;
he made the | waters stand | stillin a | heap.

14He led them with a | cloud by | day
and all the night | throughwith a | blaze of | fire.

15He split the hard | rocksin the | wilderness
and gave them drink as | from the | great | deep.

16He brought streams | out of the | rock
and made | water gush | out like | rivers.

17Yet for all this they sinned | more a | gainst him
and defied the Most | High | in the | wilderness.

18They tested | Godin their | hearts
and de | manded | foodfor their | craving.

19They spoke against | God and | said,
‘Can God prepare a | table | in the | wilderness?

20‘He struck the rock indeed, so that the waters gushed out and the streams | over | flowed,
but can he give bread or provide | meat | for his | people?’

21When the Lord heard this, he was | full of | wrath;
a fire was kindled against Jacob and his | anger went | out against | Israel,

22For they had no | faith in | God
and put no | trust in his | saving | help.

23So he commanded the | clouds a | bove
and | opened the | doors of | heaven.

24He rained down upon them | manna to | eat
and | gave them the | grain of | heaven.

25So mortals ate the | bread of | angels;
he | sent them | food in | plenty.

26He caused the east wind to | blowin the | heavens
and led out the | south wind | by his | might.

27He rained flesh upon them as | thick as | dust
and winged fowl | like the | sand of the | sea.

28He let it fall in the | midst of their | camp
and | round a | bout their | tents.

29So they ate and | were well | filled,
for he | gave them what | they de | sired.

30But they did not | stop their | craving;
their | food was | still in their | mouths,

31When the anger of God | rose a | gainst them,
and slew their strongest men and | felled the | flower of | Israel.

32But for all this, they | sinned yet | more
and put no | faith in his | wonderful | works.

33So he brought their days to an end | like a | breath
and their | years in | sudden | terror.

34Whenever he slew them, | they would | seek him;
they would repent and | earnestly | search for | God.

35They remembered that | Godwas their | rock
and the | Most High | Godtheir re | deemer.

36Yet they did but flatter him | with their | mouth
and dis | sembled | with their | tongue.

37Their heart was not | steadfast to | wards him,
neither were they | faithful | to his | covenant.

38But he was so merciful that he forgave their misdeeds and did | not des | troy them;
many a time he turned back his wrath and did not suffer his whole dis | pleasure | to be | roused.

39For he remembered that they | were but | flesh,
a wind that passes | by and | does not re | turn.

40How often they rebelled against him | in the | wilderness
and | grieved him | in the | desert!

41Again and again they | tempted | God
and provoked the | Holy | One of | Israel.

42They did not re | member his | power
in the day when he re | deemed them | from the | enemy;

43How he had wrought his | signs in | Egypt
and his | wondersin the | field of | Zoan.

44He turned their | riversinto | blood,
so that they | could not | drink of their | streams.

45He sent swarms of flies among them, | which de | voured them,
and | frogs which | brought them | ruin.

46He gave their | produceto the | caterpillar,
the | fruit of their | toilto the | locust.

47He destroyed their | vines with | hailstones
and their | sycomore | treeswith the | frost.

48He delivered their | cattle to | hailstones
and their | flocks | – to | thunderbolts.

49He set loose on them his | blazing | anger:
fury, displeasure and trouble, a | troop of des | troying | angels.

50He made a way for his anger and spared not their | souls from | death,
but gave their life | over | to the | pestilence.

51He smote the | firstborn of | Egypt,
the first fruits of their | strengthin the | tents of | Ham.

52But he led out his | people like | sheep
and guided them in the | wilderness | like a | flock.

53He led them to safety and they were | not a | fraid,
but the | seaover | whelmed their | enemies.

54He brought them to his | holy | place,
the mountain which his | right hand | tookin pos | session.

55He drove out the nations before them and shared out to them | their in | heritance;
he settled the tribes of | Israel | in their | tents.

56Yet still they tested God Most High and re | belled a | gainst him,
and | would not | keep his com | mandments.

57They turned back and fell away | like their | forebears,
starting aside | like an | unstrung | bow.

58They grieved him | with their | hill altars
and provoked him to dis | pleasure | with their | idols.

59God heard and was | greatly | angered,
and | utterly re | jected | Israel.

60He forsook the | tabernacle at | Shiloh,
the | tentof his | presence on | earth.

61He gave the ark of his strength | into cap | tivity,
his splendour | into the | adversary’s | hand.

62He delivered his | peopleto the | sword
and | raged a | gainst his in | heritance.

63The fire con | sumed their young | men;
there was | no oneto la | ment their | maidens.

64Their priests | fellby the | sword,
and their | widows made | nolamen | tation.

65Then the Lord woke as | out of | sleep,
like a warrior who had been | over | come with | wine.

66He struck his enemies | from be | hind
and put them | to per | petual | shame.

67He rejected the | tent of | Joseph
and chose | not the | tribe of | Ephraim,

68But he chose the | tribe of | Judah
and the hill of | Zion, | which he | loved.

69And there he built his sanctuary like the | heights of | heaven,
like the | earthwhich he | founded for | ever.

70He chose David | also, his | servant,
and | took him a | wayfrom the | sheepfolds.

71From following the ewes with their | lambs he | took him,
that he might shepherd Jacob his people and | Israel | his in | heritance.

72So he shepherded them with a de | voted | heart
and with | skilful | hands he | guided them.

Magnificat

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

2 who has looked with favour on his lowly servant;
from this day all generations will call me blessèd;

3 the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.

4 God has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.

5 The Lord has shown strength with his arm
and scattered the proud in their conceit,

6 casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.

7 God has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.

8 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel
to remember the promise of mercy,

9 The promise made to our forebears,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

We give you thanks, our God and Father, for you have created us and you sustain us. Through your only Son Jesus Christ you have revealed your love and your care for all your people; you are ready to forgive and to save in time of need; so we proclaim your glory, saying

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we do as Christ your Son commanded:

All we remember his passion and death, we celebrate his resurrection and ascension, and we look for the coming of his kingdom.

Accept through him our great high priest this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and, as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit, that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him:

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

All all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

The priest breaks the bread, saying

The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

All We, being many, are one body for we all share in the one bread.

Communion

After all have received, silence is kept for a space and the priest says

Let us pray.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Strengthen us by the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding,
keep your heart and mind
in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be with you and remain with you always.
Amen.

Brethren, be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist, steadfast in the faith. (1 Peter 5: 8, 9)

All Thanks be to God.

O God, make speed to save us.
