The Word of God

A Psalm

Psalm 36

1Sin whispers to the wicked, in the | depths of their | heart;
there is no fear of | God be | fore their | eyes.

2They flatter themselves in their | own | eyes
that their abominable sin will | not be | found | out.

3The words of their mouth are unrighteous and | full of de | ceit;
they have ceased to act wisely | and to | do | good.

4They think out mischief upon their beds and have set themselves in | no good | way;
nor do they ab | hor | that which is | evil.

5Your love, O Lord, reaches | to the | heavens
and your | faithfulness | to the | clouds.

6Your righteousness stands like the strong mountains, your justice like the | great | deep;
you, Lord, shall | save both | man and | beast.

7How precious is your loving | mercy, O | God!
All mortal flesh shall take refuge under the | shadow | of your | wings.

8They shall be satisfied with the abundance | of your | house;
they shall drink from the | river of | your de | lights.

9For with you is the | well of | life
and in your | light shall | we see | light.

10O continue your loving-kindness to | those who | know you
and your righteousness to | those who are | true of | heart.

11Let not the foot of pride | come a | gainst me,
nor the hand of the un | godly | thrust me a | way.

12There are they fallen, | all who work | wickedness.
They are cast down and shall | not be | able to | stand.

A Canticle

Which may be said here or between the readings

The Song of Wisdom

1 Wisdom is the brightness of eternal light,
the spotless mirror of God’s power at work,
the image of God’s goodness.

2 Wisdom is but one, yet she can do all things;
herself unchanging, she makes all things new.

3 Age after age, she enters holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets,
beloved of God as her companions.

4 Wisdom is more beautiful than the sun,
surpassing every constellation of the stars.

5 Her radiance is greater than the light of day;
for day’s light is followed by the night.

6 Against wisdom no evil can prevail;
she reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and orders all things well.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen

The Gospel Canticle

Benedictus

1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.

2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.

3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,

4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.

5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.

6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.

7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.

10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen

Daily Prayer (Evening)

Preparation

Penitence

All say

Heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault;
by what we have done
and by what we have failed to do.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,
forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest pronounces the absolution.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

If no priest is present the absolution is omitted and the following prayer may be said:

Merciful Lord,
grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that we may be cleansed from all our sins,
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Versicles and Responses

O Lord, open our lips

A Psalm

Psalm 19

1The heavens are telling the | glory of | God
and the | firmament pro | claims his | handiwork.

2One day pours out its | songto an | other
and one night unfolds | knowledge | to an | other.

3They have neither | speech nor | language
and their | voices | are not | heard,

4Yet their sound has gone out into | all | lands
and their | wordsto the | ends of the | world.

5In them has he set a tabernacle | for the | sun,
that comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber and rejoices as a | champion to | run his | course.

6It goes forth from the end of the heavens and runs to the very | end a | gain,
and there is nothing | hidden | from its | heat.

7The law of the Lord is perfect, re | viving the | soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure and gives | wisdom | to the | simple.

8The statutes of the Lord are right and re | joice the | heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure and gives | light | to the | eyes.

9The fear of the Lord is clean and en | dures for | ever;
the judgments of the Lord are true and | righteous | alto | gether.

10More to be desired are they than gold, more than | much fine | gold,
sweeter also than honey, | dripping | from the | honeycomb.

11By them also is your | servant | taught
and in keeping them | there is | great re | ward.

12Who can tell how often | they of | fend?
O cleanse me | from my | secret | faults!

13Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins lest they get do | minion | over me;
so shall I be undefiled, and | innocent of | great of | fence.

14Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable | in your | sight,
O Lord, my | strength and | my re | deemer.

A Canticle

Which may be said here or between the readings

The Easter Anthems

1 Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us,
therefore let us celebrate the feast,

2 Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness,
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

3 Christ, once raised from the dead dies no more;
death has no more dominion over him.

4 In dying, he died to sin once for all;
in living, he lives to God.

5 See yourselves therefore as dead to sin;
and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

6 Christ has been raised from the dead:
the firstfruits of those who sleep.

7 For as by man came death,
by man has come also the resurrection of the dead.

8 For as in Adam all die,
even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

The Gospel Canticle

Magnificat

1 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

2 who has looked with favour on his lowly servant;
from this day all generations will call me blessèd;

3 the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.

4 God has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.

5 The Lord has shown strength with his arm
and scattered the proud in their conceit,

6 casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.

7 God has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.

8 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel
to remember the promise of mercy,

9 The promise made to our forebears,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

A Psalm

Psalm 37

1Fret not because of | evil | doers;
be not | jealous of | thosewho do | wrong.

2For they shall soon | wither like | grass
and like the green | herb | fade a | way.

3Trust in the Lord and be | doing | good;
dwell in the land | and be | nourished with | truth.

4Let your delight be | in the | Lord
and he will | give you your | heart’s de | sire.

5Commit your way to the Lord and | put your | trust in him,
and | he will | bring it to | pass.

6He will make your righteousness as | clear as the | light
and your just | dealing | as the | noonday.

7Be still before the | Lord and | wait for him;
do not fret over those that prosper as they | follow their | evil | schemes.

8Refrain from anger and a | bandon | wrath;
do not fret, | lestyou be | moved to do | evil.

9For evildoers | shall be cut | off,
but those who wait upon the Lord | shall pos | sess the | land.

11But the lowly shall pos | sess the | land
and shall de | lightin a | bundance of | peace.

12The wicked plot a | gainst the | righteous
and | gnash at them | with their | teeth.

13The Lord shall | laugh at the | wicked,
for he | sees that their | day is | coming.

14The wicked draw their sword and bend their bow to strike down the | poor and | needy,
to slaughter | those who | walk in | truth.

15Their sword shall go through their | own | heart
and their | bows | shall be | broken.

16The little that the | righteous | have
is better than great | riches | of the | wicked.

17For the arms of the wicked | shall be | broken,
but the | Lord up | holds the | righteous.

18The Lord knows the | days of the | godly,
and their in | heritance shall | stand for | ever.

19They shall not be put to shame in the | perilous | time,
and in days of famine | they shall | have e | nough.

20But the | wicked shall | perish;
like the glory of the meadows the enemies of the Lord shall vanish; | they shall | vanish like | smoke.

21The wicked borrow and | do not re | pay,
but the | righteous are | generous in | giving.

22For those who are blest by God shall pos | sess the | land,
but those who are cursed by him | shall be | rooted | out.

23When your steps are guided | by the | Lord
and you de | light | in his | way,

24Though you stumble, you shall | not fall | headlong,
for the Lord | holds you | fastby the | hand.

25I have been young and | now am | old,
yet never have I seen the righteous forsaken, or their | children | begging their | bread.

26All the day long they are | generous in | lending,
and their children | also | shall be | blest.

27Depart from evil | and do | good
and you | shall a | bide for | ever.

28For the Lord loves the | thingthat is | right
and will | not for | sake his | faithful ones.

29The unjust shall be des | troyed for | ever,
and the offspring of the wicked | shall be | rooted | out.

30The righteous shall pos | sess the | land
and | dwell in | it for | ever.

31The mouth of the righteous | utters | wisdom,
and their tongue | speaks the | thingthat is | right.

32The law of their God is | in their | heart
and their | footsteps | shall not | slide.

33The wicked | spy on the | righteous
and | seek oc | casion to | slay them.

34The Lord will not leave them | in their | hand,
nor let them be con | demned when | they are | judged.

35Wait upon the Lord and | keep his | way;
he will raise you up to possess the land, and when the wicked are up | rooted, | you shall | see it.

36I myself have seen the wicked in | great | power
and flourishing like a | tree in | full | leaf.

37I went by and lo, | they were | gone;
I sought them, but | they could | nowhere be | found.

38Keep innocence and heed the | thingthat is | right,
for that will | bring you | peaceat the | last.

39But the sinners shall | perish to | gether,
and the posterity of the wicked | shall be | rooted | out.

40The salvation of the righteous | comes from the | Lord;
he is their stronghold | in the | time of | trouble.

41The Lord shall stand by them | and de | liver them;
he shall deliver them from the wicked and shall save them, because they have | put their | trust in | him.

Jesus says: Come to me all that labour and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. (Matthew 11: 28)

God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that all who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3: 16)

I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall never be hungry and whoever believes in me shall never be thirsty. (John 6: 35)

Thanksgiving

Thank God for all the many blessings you have received, and for all that is at present being done for you; for all doctors and nurses; (for this hospital and all who work here).

Pray for all those you love: (for the other patients in your ward;) (for all who will be receiving communion with you;) for all who look after you; for all in need; for yourself, that you may come closer to God and his healing power.

All Lord Jesus Christ, you came to the poor and powerless and gave them hope. Come to me in this wonderful sacrament and raise me up in love to you, for I am helpless without you.

Be calm in the knowledge that you are under the protection of Almighty God.

The following prayer may be used in place of the Collect for Purity:

God of peace, you teach us that in returning to you we shall be saved:

Almighty God,

The Ministry of the Word

One or two readings

a gospel reading should normally be included.

The priest says

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1: 8)

Let us confess our sins.

A short pause for self-examination.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought and word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may walk in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest says

Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer

Those present may mention personal needs and thanksgivings. The laying on of hands and/or anointing with oil may take place here or after receiving Holy Communion

The Great Thanksgiving

The priest takes the bread and wine.

The Lord is here.

All His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks, our God and Father, for you have created us and you sustain us. Through your only Son Jesus Christ you have revealed your love and your care for all your people; you are ready to forgive and to save in time of need; so we proclaim your glory, saying

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we do as Christ your Son commanded:

All we remember his passion and death, we celebrate his resurrection and ascension, and we look for the coming of his kingdom.

Accept through him our great high priest this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and, as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit, that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him:

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

All all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

The priest breaks the bread, saying

The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

All We, being many, are one body for we all share in the one bread.

Communion

After all have received, silence is kept for a space and the priest says

Let us pray.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Strengthen us by the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding,
keep your heart and mind
in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be with you and remain with you always.
Amen.

Stand

O God, make speed to save us.

All O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;

All as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

to slaughter | those who | walk in | truth.

20But the | wicked shall | perish;
like the glory of the meadows the enemies of the Lord shall vanish; | they shall | vanish like | smoke.

35Wait upon the Lord and | keep his | way;
he will raise you up to possess the land, and when the wicked are up | rooted, | you shall | see it.

36I myself have seen the wicked in | great | power
and flourishing like a | tree in | full | leaf.

37I went by and lo, | they were | gone;
I sought them, but | they could | nowhere be | found.

38Keep innocence and heed the | thingthat is | right,
for that will | bring you | peaceat the | last.

39But the sinners shall | perish to | gether,
and the posterity of the wicked | shall be | rooted | out.

40The salvation of the righteous | comes from the | Lord;
he is their stronghold | in the | time of | trouble.

41The Lord shall stand by them | and de | liver them;
he shall deliver them from the wicked and shall save them, because they have | put their | trust in | him.

A Canticle

Nunc Dimittis

1 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word.

2 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

3 To be a light to lighten the Gentiles
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

4 Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

All Preserve us, O Lord, while waking, and guard us while sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

All Amen.

All Amen

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, who at this evening hour didst rest in the sepulchre, and didst thereby sanctify the grave to be a bed of hope to thy people: Make us so to abound in sorrow for our sins, which were the cause of thy passion, that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with thee: who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God world without end.

All Amen

Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this place (or, our homes), and drive away all the snares of the enemy; Let thy holy angels dwell herein (or, therein) to preserve us in peace; and may thy blessing be upon us evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
