All and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

The Word of God

A Psalm

Psalm 38

1Rebuke me not, O Lord, | in your | anger,
neither chasten me | in your | heavy dis | pleasure.

2For your arrows | have stuck | fast in me
and your hand | presses | hard up | on me.

3There is no health in my flesh because of your | indig | nation;
there is no peace in my | bones be | cause of my | sin.

4For my iniquities have gone | over my | head;
their weight is a | burden too | heavy to | bear.

5My wounds | stink and | fester
be | cause of | my | foolishness.

6I am utterly bowed down and brought | very | low;
I go about | mourning | all the day | long.

7My loins are filled with | searing | pain;
there | is no | health in my | flesh.

8I am feeble and | utterly | crushed;
I roar aloud because of the dis | quiet | of my | heart.

9O Lord, you know all | my de | sires
and my sighing | is not | hidden | from you.

10My heart is pounding, my | strength has | failed me;
the light of my | eyes is | gone | from me.

11My friends and companions stand apart from | my af | fliction;
my | neighbours | stand afar | off.

12Those who seek after my | life lay | snares for me;
and those who would harm me whisper evil and mutter | slander | all the day | long.

13But I am like one who is | deaf and | hears not,
like one that is dumb, who | does not | open his | mouth.

14I have become like one who | does not | hear
and from whose | mouth comes | no re | tort.

15For in you, Lord, have I | put my | trust;
you will | answer me, O | Lord my | God.

16For I said, ‘Let them not | triumph | over me,
those who exult over me | when my | foot | slips.’

17Truly, I am on the | verge of | falling
and my | pain is | ever | with me.

18I will con | fessmy in | iquity
and be | sorry | for my | sin.

19Those that are my enemies without any | cause are | mighty,
and those who hate me | wrongfully are | many in | number.

20Those who repay evil for good | are a | gainst me,
because the | good is | what I | seek.

21Forsake me | not, O | Lord;
be not | far from me, | O my | God.

22Make | haste to | help me,
O | Lord of | my sal | vation.

A Canticle

Which may be said here or between the readings

1 We praise you, O God,
We acclaim you as the Lord; all creation worships you,
the Father everlasting.

2 To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:

3 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.

4 The glorious company of apostles praise you;
the noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

5 The white-robed army of martyrs praise you;
throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you:

6 Father, of majesty unbounded,
your true and only Son, worthy of all praise,
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

Part 2

7 You, Christ, are the King of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.

8 When you took our flesh to set us free,
you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb.

9 You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

10 You are seated at God’s right hand in glory:
we believe that you will come to be our judge.

11 Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,

12 and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting.

One or two readings

The Gospel Canticle

Benedictus

1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.

2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.

3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,

4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.

5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.

6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.

7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.

9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.

10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen

The Ministry of the Word

One or two readings

a gospel reading should normally be included.

The priest says

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1: 8)

Let us confess our sins.

A short pause for self-examination.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned in thought and word and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may walk in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest says

Almighty God,
who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer

Those present may mention personal needs and thanksgivings. The laying on of hands and/or anointing with oil may take place here or after receiving Holy Communion

The Great Thanksgiving

The priest takes the bread and wine.

The Lord is here.

All His Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks, our God and Father, for you have created us and you sustain us. Through your only Son Jesus Christ you have revealed your love and your care for all your people; you are ready to forgive and to save in time of need; so we proclaim your glory, saying

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night that he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we do as Christ your Son commanded:

All we remember his passion and death, we celebrate his resurrection and ascension, and we look for the coming of his kingdom.

Accept through him our great high priest this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and, as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit, that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him:

Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

All all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

The priest breaks the bread, saying

The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ.

All We, being many, are one body for we all share in the one bread.

Communion

After all have received, silence is kept for a space and the priest says

Let us pray.

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Strengthen us by the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God, which passes all understanding,
keep your heart and mind
in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and the blessing of God Almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be with you and remain with you always.
Amen.

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, who at this evening hour didst rest in the sepulchre, and didst thereby sanctify the grave to be a bed of hope to thy people: Make us so to abound in sorrow for our sins, which were the cause of thy passion, that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with thee: who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God world without end.

All Amen

Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this place (or, our homes), and drive away all the snares of the enemy; Let thy holy angels dwell herein (or, therein) to preserve us in peace; and may thy blessing be upon us evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen

We will lay us down in peace and take our rest.

All For it is thou, Lord, only, that makest us dwell in safety.

The Lord be with you

All and with thy spirit.

Let us bless the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.

The Almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve us this night and for evermore.

All Amen.
