The Word of God
A Psalm
Psalm 76
1In Judah | God is | known; ■
his | name is | great in | Israel.
2At Salem | is his | tabernacle, ■
and his | dwelling | place in | Zion.
3There broke he the flashing | arrows•of the | bow, ■
the shield, the | sword•and the | weapons of | war.
4In the light of splendour | you ap | peared, ■
glorious | from the e | ternal | mountains.
5The boastful were plundered; they have | slept their | sleep; ■
none of the | warriors can | lift their | hand.
6At your rebuke, O | God of | Jacob, ■
both | horse and | chariot fell | stunned.
7Terrible are | you in | majesty: ■
who can stand before your | face when | you are | angry?
8You caused your judgment to be | heard from | heaven; ■
the earth | trembled | and was | still,
9When God a | rose to | judgment, ■
to | save•all the | meek upon | earth.
10You crushed the | wrath of the | peoples ■
and | bridled the | wrathful | remnant.
11Make a vow to the Lord your | God and | keep it; ■
let all who are round about him bring gifts to him that is | worthy | to be | feared.
12He breaks down the | spirit of | princes ■
and strikes | terror•in the | kings of the | earth.
Psalm 77
1I cry a | loud to | God; ■
I cry aloud to | God and | he will | hear me.
2In the day of my trouble I have | sought the | Lord; ■
by night my hand is stretched out and does not tire; my | soul re | fuses | comfort.
3I think upon God | and I | groan; ■
I ponder, | and my | spirit | faints.
4You will not let my | eyelids | close; ■
I am so troubled | that I | cannot | speak.
5I consider the | days of | old; ■
I re | member the | years long | past;
6I commune with my | heart•in the | night; ■
my spirit | searches for | under | standing.
7Will the Lord cast us | off for | ever? ■
Will he | no more | show us his | favour?
8Has his loving mercy clean | gone for | ever? ■
Has his promise come to an | end for | ever | more?
9Has God for | gotten•to be | gracious? ■
Has he shut up his com | passion | in dis | pleasure?
10And I said, ‘My | grief is | this: ■
that the right hand of the Most | High has | lost its | strength.’
11I will remember the | works of the | Lord ■
and call to mind your | wonders of | old | time.
12I will meditate on | all your | works ■
and | ponder your | mighty | deeds.
13Your way, O | God, is | holy; ■
who is so | great a | god as | our God?
14You are the | God who worked | wonders ■
and declared your | power a | mong the | peoples.
15With a mighty arm you re | deemed your | people, ■
the | children of | Jacob and | Joseph.
16The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and | were a | fraid; ■
the | depths | also were | troubled.
17The clouds poured out water; the | skies | thundered; ■
your arrows | flashed on | every | side;
18The voice of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings | lit up the | ground; ■
the | earth | trembled and | shook.
19Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the | great | waters, ■
but your | footsteps | were not | known.
20You led your | people like | sheep ■
by the | hand of | Moses and | Aaron.
A Canticle
Which may be said here or between the readings
1 We praise you, O God,
We acclaim you as the Lord; all creation worships you,
the Father everlasting.
2 To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:
3 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
4 The glorious company of apostles praise you;
the noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
5 The white-robed army of martyrs praise you;
throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you:
6 Father, of majesty unbounded,
your true and only Son, worthy of all praise,
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.
Part 2
7 You, Christ, are the King of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
8 When you took our flesh to set us free,
you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb.
9 You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
10 You are seated at God’s right hand in glory:
we believe that you will come to be our judge.
11 Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
12 and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting.
One or two readings
The Gospel Canticle
Benedictus
1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,
4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.
6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.
7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed
May be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Collect of the Day
Almighty and eternal God,
who, for the firmer foundation of our faith,
allowed your holy apostle Thomas
to doubt the resurrection of your Son
till word and sight convinced him:
Grant to us, who have not seen, that we also may believe
and so confess Christ as our Lord and our God;
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Alternative collects
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life, and to serve you is perfect freedom:
Defend us in all assaults of our enemies,
that we, surely trusting in your protection,
may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everliving God,
we give you thanks for bringing us safely to this day:
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
and in all things guide us to know and do your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Go before us, Lord, in all our doings, with your most gracious favour,
and further us with your continual help;
that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you,
we may glorify your holy name,
and finally by your mercy attain everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Heavenly Father,
in whom we live and move and have our being:
We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us
that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life,
we may never forget your presence
but may remember that we are always walking in your sight,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Going out as God’s people
The Lord be with you
All and also with you.
Let us bless the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.
All Amen
To the King of Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God
be honour and glory for ever and ever.

fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the Holy Spirit
you may abound in hope.
All Amen
