The Word of God
A Psalm
Psalm 54
1Save me, O God, | by your | name ■
and | vindi•cate me | by your | power.
2Hear my | prayer, O | God; ■
give | heed•to the | words of my | mouth.
3For strangers have risen up against me, and the ruthless seek | after my | life; ■
they have | not set | God be | fore them.
4Behold, | God is my | helper; ■
it is the | Lord•who up | holds my | life.
5May evil rebound on those who | lie in | wait for me; ■
des | troy them | in your | faithfulness.
6An offering of a free heart | will I | give you ■
and praise your name, O | Lord, for | it is | gracious.
7For he has delivered me out of | all my | trouble, ■
and my eye has seen the | downfall | of my | enemies.
Psalm 55
1Hear my | prayer, O | God; ■
hide not your | self from | my pe | tition.
2Give heed to | me and | answer me; ■
I am | restless in | my com | plaining.
3I am alarmed at the | voice of the | enemy ■
and at the | clamour | of the | wicked;
4For they would bring down | evil up | on me ■
and are | set a | gainst me in | fury.
5My heart is dis | quieted with | in me, ■
and the terrors of | death have | fallen up | on me.
6Fearfulness and trembling are | come up | on me, ■
and a horrible | dread has | over | whelmed me.
7And I said: ‘O that I had | wings•like a | dove, ■
for then would I fly a | way and | be at | rest.
8‘Then would I flee | far a | way ■
and make my | lodging | in the | wilderness.
9‘I would make | haste to es | cape ■
from the | stormy | wind and | tempest.’
10Confuse their tongues, O Lord, | and di | vide them, ■
for I have seen violence and | strife | in the | city.
11Day and night they go a | bout•on her | walls; ■
mischief and | trouble are | in her | midst.
12Wickedness | walks in her | streets; ■
oppression and guile | never | leave her | squares.
13For it was not an open enemy | that re | viled me, ■
for | then I | could have | borne it;
14Nor was it my adversary that puffed himself | up a | gainst me, ■
for then I | would have | hid myself | from him.
15But it was even you, one | like my | self, ■
my companion and my | own fa | miliar | friend.
16We took sweet | counsel to | gether ■
and walked with the multitude | in the | house of | God.
17Let death come suddenly upon them; let them go down a | live•to the | Pit; ■
for wickedness inhabits their | dwellings, their | very | hearts.
18As for me, I will | call upon | God ■
and the | Lord | will de | liver me.
19In the evening and morning and at noonday I will pray and make my | suppli | cation, ■
and | he shall | hear my | voice.
20He shall redeem my soul in peace from the battle | waged a | gainst me, ■
for | many have | come up | on me.
21God, who is enthroned of old, will hear and | bring them | down; ■
they will not repent, for they | have no | fear of | God.
22My companion stretched out his hands a | gainst his | friend ■
and has | broken | his | covenant;
23His speech was softer than butter, though war was | in his | heart; ■
his words were smoother than oil, yet | are they | naked | swords.
24Cast your burden upon the Lord and he | will sus | tain you, ■
and will not let the | righteous | fall for | ever.
25But those that are bloodthirsty and de | ceitful, O | God, ■
you will bring | down•to the | pit of des | truction.
26They shall not live out | half their | days, ■
but my trust shall | be in | you, O | Lord.
A Canticle
Which may be said here or between the readings
1 We praise you, O God,
We acclaim you as the Lord; all creation worships you,
the Father everlasting.
2 To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,
the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:
3 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
4 The glorious company of apostles praise you;
the noble fellowship of prophets praise you.
5 The white-robed army of martyrs praise you;
throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you:
6 Father, of majesty unbounded,
your true and only Son, worthy of all praise,
the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.
Part 2
7 You, Christ, are the King of glory,
the eternal Son of the Father.
8 When you took our flesh to set us free,
you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb.
9 You overcame the sting of death
and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
10 You are seated at God’s right hand in glory:
we believe that you will come to be our judge.
11 Come then, Lord, and help your people,
bought with the price of your own blood,
12 and bring us with your saints
to glory everlasting.
One or two readings
The Gospel Canticle
Benedictus
1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,
4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.
6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.
7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed
May be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
