Framed Disestablishment Stamp presented to RCB Library
A framed first day cover of the Disestablishment Stamp was presented to the RCB Library yesterday (Tuesday December 14) in recognition of the contribution of the Library and its staff to the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland.

As the National Programme for Disestablishment 150 draws to a close, co–ordinator Caoimhe Leppard met with the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, who championed this three–year programme from the beginning, to reflect on its defining highlights.

Commemorative stamp features St Fin Barre’s Cathedral window
An Post have launched a new stamp commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland which came into force on 1st January 1871. The ‘N’ rate stamp, designed by Vermillion Design in Dublin, is an image of the Sun, Moon and Stars taken from one of the panels in the west rose window of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Cork.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Disestablishment and to support Church of Ireland ministry in the future, the Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD) has created a bursary fund to significantly encourage the number of young people undertaking mission and training experiences that would benefit ministry in the Church of Ireland.
New Year’s Day 1871 – the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland
Following the passing of the Irish Church Act 1869, and after 18 months of intense preparation, debate, sometimes controversy, and legislating by the General Convention of the Church of Ireland in 1870, the Disestablishment of the Church of Ireland occurred on 1st January 1871: 150 years ago.
1st January 2021 will mark the 150th anniversary of the Irish Church Act 1869, which ended the Church of Ireland’s established status and its union with the Church of England, taking effect.
