The Word of God
A Psalm
Psalm 49
1Hear this, | all you | peoples; ■
listen, all | you that | dwell•in the | world,
2You of low or | high de | gree, ■
both | rich and | poor to | gether.
3My mouth shall | speak of | wisdom ■
and my heart shall | meditate on | under | standing.
4I will incline my | ear•to a | parable; ■
I will unfold my | riddle | with the | lyre.
5Why should I fear in | evil | days, ■
when the | malice•of my | foes sur | rounds me,
6Such as | trust•in their | goods ■
and glory in the a | bundance | of their | riches?
7For no one can indeed | ransom an | other ■
or pay to | God the | price of de | liverance.
8To ransom a soul | is too | costly; ■
there is | no price | one could | pay for it,
9So that they might | live for | ever, ■
and | never | see the | grave.
10For we see that the wise die also; with the foolish and | ignorant they | perish and | leave their | riches to | others.
11Their tomb is their home for ever, their dwelling through | all•gene | rations, ■
though they call their lands | after their | own | names.
12Those who have honour, but lack | under | standing, ■
are | like the | beasts that | perish.
13Such is the way of those who | boast in them | selves, ■
the end of those who de | light in their | own | words.
14Like a flock of sheep they are destined to die; | death is their | shepherd; ■
they go | down | straight•to the | Pit.
15Their beauty shall | waste a | way, ■
and the land of the | dead shall | be their | dwelling.
16But God shall | ransom my | soul; ■
from the grasp of | death | will he | take me.
17Be not afraid if | some grow | rich ■
and the | glory•of their | house in | creases,
18For they will carry nothing away | when they | die, ■
nor will their | glory | follow | after them.
19Though they count themselves happy | while they | live ■
and | praise you for | your suc | cess,
20They shall enter the company | of their | ancestors ■
who will | nevermore | see the | light.
21Those who have honour, but lack | under | standing, ■
are | like the | beasts that | perish.
A Canticle
Which may be said here or between the readings
The Song of Isaiah
1 Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid.
2 for the Lord God is my strength and my might;
he has become my salvation.
3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.
And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name;
4 Make known his deeds among the nations;
proclaim that his name is exalted.
5 Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously;
let this be known in all the earth.
6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
One or two readings
The Gospel Canticle
Benedictus
1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,
4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.
6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.
7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed
May be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
