As We Believe So We Pray – A Book of Daily Prayer
Author: Brian Mayne
As We Believe So We Pray: A Book of Daily Prayer contains convenient, compact and constructive ways of praying in harmony with the church. Forms of prayer based on scripture are presented for twelve weekdays. These are focused on phrases from the Apostles’ Creed. There are also three forms focusing on Irish saints, holy communion, and on the expression ‘in sickness and in health’.
Drawing to a large extent on The Book of Common Prayer 2004 , and written by that book’s editor, Canon Brian Mayne, each form has a prayer of pentience, a psalm, bible reading and canticle, with suggestions for intercession and thanksgiving.

The Prayer Books of the Church of Ireland 1551–2004
Editor: Brian Mayne
As the Church of Ireland prepares to receive the third revision of the Book of Common Prayer four members of the Liturgical Advisory Committee have written essays describing in highly readable form the books that precede the 2004 edition and something of its coming about.
These essays give an insight into the way the worship and devotional life of Irish Anglicans has been formed over four and a hald centuries.
BCP 2004 editor, Canon Brian Mayne, said: “All four writers have a well of knowledge and I am delighted to have been able to draw from it and in an inexpensive booklet share that knowledge with a wider audience”.
The writers are Bishop Richard Clarke, Canon Edgar Turner, Canon Michael Kennedy and Canon Brian Mayne, who has also edited the booklet.

The Word of the Lord – Readings for principal services on Sundays, Principal Holy Days and Festivals
Editor: Brian Mayne
Canon Brian Mayne, editor of the 2004 edition of the Book of Common Prayer , also prepared The Word of the Lord – the readings for the principal service according to the table in the new Prayer Book in the NRSV. This is a Church of Ireland version of the three volumes compiled for the Common Worship Lectionary of the Church of England by the Franciscan lay liturgist Brother Tristram who died at the end of 2002.
Brian Mayne said: “I realised quite early in preparing the new Prayer Book that many clergy and people would find the absence of the printed out readings inconvenient. Yes, you can mark bibles in your chosen translation or use one of the books prepared for the Church of England. But with the latter there are a couple of dozen places where the Irish RCL readings differ.
“I was able to use my friendship with Brother Tristram and contacts in England to obtain copies of his files and from them construct a Church of Ireland version which includes the Old Testament, New Testament and Gospel readings for all the holy days as well as Sundays.
“Canterbury Press was delighted to publish this version as their first resource for a Church of Ireland market and we are pleased with the clear print and good binding which will make it easy to use at reading desk or at Holy Communion. I also hope that those who regularly read the lessons will obtain copies to help them prepare for the very important ministry called in the new Book of Common Prayer ‘Proclaiming the Word’”
The book of over 500 pages is priced at £25.00 sterling, Euro 37.50. Canterbury Press books are now distributed throughout Ireland by Columba Mercier Distribution Ltd.
