Statement on the death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan

The Rt Revd Ferran Glenfield, Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh, has issued a statement following the fatal shooting of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, yesterday evening: 

‘I wish to express my sadness and shock at the killing of Detective Garda Colm Horkan whilst on duty yesterday evening in Castlerea.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his colleagues in An Garda Síochána. 

The Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, the Rt Revd Patrick Rooke, whose home is in Co. Mayo, has extended the sympathy and sadness of the Church of Ireland population in the county of Mayo and wider diocese to the family of Detective Garda Colm Horkan. The Bishop remarked: “His tragic death reminds us yet again of the debt we owe to An Garda Síochána and to all those essential workers who ensure our safety.”
