Lynn is part of all–Ireland sewing effort

Lynn Anderson, a parishioner in St Elizabeth’s Dundonald, may have to self–isolate, but she’s doing her part in the fight against Covid–19 by sewing facemasks.

“I’m self–isolating as I have asthma, so I can’t do much – but I can sew, says Lynn. “I’ve been making patchwork quilts for some years!

“I read an article in a local newspaper a few weeks ago about a group on Facebook called ‘Masks 4 All Ireland – Sewists Against COVID–19’ where people could volunteer their time to sew face masks, donate material or money to help care workers. The group was set up by Mary Murphy who used to be an aeronautical engineer but has latterly trained in fashion.

“So I went to Facebook and joined the group. It is a self–funding group and there’s a Go Fund Me page as they are trying to raise money to buy fabric to give to the sewers who are producing the masks. So far about £11,000.00 has been raised. There are about 500 sewists from all over Ireland making fabric face masks from 100% cotton and approximately 15,000 masks have been made. There’s a need for over 80,000 though! It’s a real cottage industry.”

The masks are needed to help meet the shortage of surgical facemasks. Mary has designed a mask which is as effective as possible. It has a pocket for a filter (this can simply be some kitchen towel). They are reusable and can be washed at a high temperature.

“The aim is to get one to each worker in care homes all over Ireland and also to other health care workers,” says Lynn. “Some sewists are producing a 100 per day – I’m not quite up to that yet!”
