Baby Basics in Armagh Diocese

At its simplest, Baby Basics can be described as the equivalent of a “food bank for mums and new–born babies.”  The idea was founded in 2009 at the Kings Centre Church in Sheffield, and new centres based at St Swithin’s Church, Magherafelt, and Mullavilly Parish Church, both in the Diocese of Armagh, have recently opened.

The first Moses basket from the Magherafelt Baby Basics centre being collected by Elizabeth Duncan, a community midwife in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, from Sonia Glendinning, centre leader, and other members of the Magherafelt team.

Baby Basics works with midwives, health visitors and other local organisations to provide starter packs for those in need. We aim to help vulnerable groups such as teenage mums, families on low income, refugees, and women fleeing domestic abuse and trafficking.

Our Moses baskets provide a safer place to sleep and are packed full of toiletries for mum and baby, nappies, wipes, maternity pads, as well as blankets, towels and baby clothes. Donations of any of the above are most welcome. For some, these are the only items they have for their new–born baby.
