Seminar in CITI
A seminar on Anglican–Roman Catholic work on receptive ecumenism will be held in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute on Wednesday, 9 October, at 7.30pm. The seminar is being run by the Anglican and Ecumenical Affairs Working Group of the Church of Ireland Commission for Christian Unity and Dialogue, of which Canon Ian Ellis is the chairman.
The focus of the evening will be on the latest report of the Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC–III), Walking Together on the Way, and the seminar will be open to any interested people. The report focuses on receptive ecumenism – the principle that asks first what one’s own tradition can learn from another, rather than being first concerned about what other traditions can learn from one’s own. Formally practised, it is a relatively new approach to ecumenical dialogue.
The seminar will be addressed by two ARCIC members. Bishop Christopher Hill has long been involved in ecumenical relations. He was the Church of England’s Bishop of Guildford from 2004 to 2013. He is a former President of the Conference of European Churches and is a current member of ARCIC–III. Monsignor Mark Langham was Administrator of Westminster Cathedral until 2008, when he was appointed to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Since 2013, he has been chaplain at Fisher House, the University of Cambridge’s Roman Catholic chaplaincy. He is a former Co–Secretary of ARCIC.
The formal contributions will be followed by an opportunity for questions and answers
Tomorrow (Sunday) the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, will attend the consecration of Bishop Bo–Goran Astrand as the Bishop of Provoo. In Limerick the parishioners of St Michael’s church, Pery Square, will celebrate their Patronal Festival at 10.30am when the preacher will be the Bishop of Clogher, the Rt Revd John McDowell. This year the church is marking its 175th anniversary. The visiting preacher in Crohane parish church, Co. Tipperary, which is part of the Kilcooley union of parishes, will be the sometime Dean of St Patrick’s cathedral, Dr Robert MacCarthy.
On Monday evening in Trinity College, Dublin, the latest book from the Revd Dr John Bartlett, which continues his work on Palestine, will be launched. Burchard of Mount Sion OP: description terrae sanctae, which has been edited and translated by Canon Bartlett, is the first full study dedicated to Burchard, his career and writings, containing a detailed study of the texts, the geography, and Burchard’s identification of biblical sites. It provides a new Latin text of the two versions, with apparatus criticus, based on hitherto unused manuscript evidence, and new translations. The book has been published by Oxford University Press in its Oxford Medieval Texts series. Dr Bartlett is a Fellow Emeritus of TCD where he began his teaching career in the old Divinity School, later moving to the Church of Ireland Theological College where he was Principal from 1989 until his retirement in 2001.
In Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, on Thursday evening at 7.15pm, there will be a Celebration of Animals Service in St Finbarre’s parish church to which all members of the community and their pets are welcome. Donations on the evening will be in aid of Collon Animal Sanctuary in support of its work in re–housing and caring for unwanted animals of all varieties.
Choral Compline resumes at Sandford Parish Church, Ranelagh, on Friday evening at 7pm.
