Opening of ‘Cúinne Caird’ in the RCB Library, Dublin / Oscailt ‘Cúinne Caird’ i Leabharlann RCB i mBÁC

Saturday, 14th September 2019 / 14 Meán Fómhair 2019

The opening of ‘Cúinne Caird’, a collection of Irish books and related materials of the late Bishop Donald Caird (1925–2017), will take place in the RCB Library tomorrow, Saturday, 14th September 2019, at 12noon.

This printed collection was presented to the RCB Library by Nancy, his widow (in the context of a larger collection of related archival and photographic materials), and a special corner of the Library, ‘Cúinne Caird’, has been created to exhibit the books in memory of Bishop Donald Caird.

The collection as a whole consists of documents, photographs, sermons and other related materials pertaining to his great interest in the language.  The Library has catalogued the printed collection to date, and as Robert Gallagher, Library Administrator, explained: ‘As the Library did not have many books in Irish in its collections, it was decided to keep the collection together in a special section dedicated to the memory of Bishop Caird, which we have called Cúinne Caird.  I began the project by organising the books in order of the date they were published and, in addition to this, each book was recorded on our digital catalogue.’

A special cabinet, in which the collection will be exhibited, was commissioned from Shane Duffly.

Bishop Donald Caird was a long–time member of the RCB Library. He often visited there throughout his career and subsequently during his retirement.  He was a member of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise (the Irish Guild of the Church) since 1943.  In 2010, he was awarded the Ghradam an Phiarsaigh prize which is central to the ‘Cúinne Caird’.

This event has been organised by the RCB Library and Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.

Beidh oscailt ‘Cúinne Caird’, bailiúchán leabhar Gaeilge an Easpaig Dónall Caird (1925–2017) i Leabharlann RCB (Representative Church Body) an 14 Meán Fómhair ag 12.00.

Bhronn Nancy Caird, a bhaintreach, na leabhair ar an leabharlann agus tá an Leabharlann tar éis spás speisialta a shocrú, ‘Cúinne Caird’ i gcuimhne ar an Easpag Dónall Caird.

I ndiadh a bháis in 2017, bhronn a bhaintreach, Nancy, a chuid cáipéisí, grianghriaf agus seanmóirí ar Leabharlann RCB.  Bhí cáil mhór air, a théann i bhfad thar limistéar phobal Eaglais na hÉireann. Chuir sé an–suim sa Ghaeilge, san oideachas agus san fhealsúnacht le linn a shaol.

Rinneadh na leabhair a chatalógú de réir dáta agus beidh an clár digiteach den bhailiúchán luachmhar ar fáil chomh maith.  Beidh siad á dtaispeáint i gcaibinéad speisialta coimisiúnaithe ó Shane Duffly.

Dúirt Robert Gallagher, Riathóir an Leabharlainn: ‘De bharr nach raibh mórán leabhar againn i nGaeilge sa Leabharlann, rinneadh cinneadh an bailiúchán an choimeád le chéile in aon áit amháin, darb ainm ‘Cúinne Caird’ i gcuimhne ar an Easpag Dónall Caird.  Ar dtús chuir mé ord agus eagar ar na cáipéisí de réir dáta agus ansin rinne mé iad a chatalógú i leagan digiteach.’

Bhí an tEaspag Dónall Caird mar bhall den leabharlann le fada. D’fheictí go minic é sa leabharlann le linn a ghairme agus tar éis dó dul ar scor.  Bhí sé ina bhall de Chumann Gaelach na hEaglaise ó 1943 ar aghaidh.   Bronnadh Gradam an Phairsaigh air in 2010 agus tá an gradam sin ann freisin.

Tá an oscailt eagraithe ag Leabharlann RCB agus ag Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.
