New Ministry Fund

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Disestablishment and to support the Church’s ministry in the future, the Church of Ireland Youth Department, with support from the Priorities Fund and the Fabric and Development Fund, has created a Young Leaders In Ministry Fund.

This fund will provide individual young people with small, but significant, bursaries to enable them to apply for teams, training and placements that might otherwise have been financially challenging.  This is an Ireland–wide project that will hopefully support over 100 people per year over a potential period of three years and beyond.  Applicants will need to demonstrate their current involvement in ministry in the Church of Ireland.

The Bishop of Meath and Kildare, the Most Revd Bishop Pat Storey, who is President of CIYD, has welcomed the new opportunities that this Young Leaders in Ministry Fund will provide.  Young people will be enabled to seek new adventures and fresh challenges which they could not otherwise do.  All applications will be assessed for their potential contribution to church life and the individual’s own faith journey.

Application forms are available online at www.ciyd.org and the first closing date for applications is Saturday, 15 June 2019. For  further information, please email the National Youth Officer, Simon Henry: simon@ciyd.org

At General Synod the Church and Society Commission showed a video highlighting examples of how parishes are looking after the environment.  This is now available online (at https://youtu.be/tUUQ0JgzuMI) and a brief article to introduce it is available at http://bit.ly/2VEsFLT. The video features a gardening project in the grounds of St Mary’s parish church, Carlow; solar panels at the Dunluce parish centre, in Bushmills; and keep–cups for tea/coffee at the evening service in Holywood parish church. It’s hoped that this can help parishes in any part of the island to think about what they can do environmentally with the resources they have.

Tomorrow (Sunday) at 10.15am, BBC Radio Ulster will broadcast Morning Service from Rossorry parish church, Co. Fermanagh, where the rector is Canon Ian Ellis.

A service of celebration to mark the bi–centenary of St Fiaac’s church, Clonegal, Co. Carlow, will be held on Friday evening at 7pm. The Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory, the Rt Revd Michael Burrows, will be preacher and The Four Hymns will play at the service.

The dioceses of Meath and Kildare will hold a Diocesan Healing Service on Sunday 9th June at which everyone will be  warmly welcomed. This event will take place in St Patrick’s cathedral, Trim, at 6.30pm and it will be run by the Church’s Ministry of Healing. The service is part of ‘Mind Yourself’ – a diocesan project to raise awareness of mental health issues, and signpost people to groups that will be able to help. The diocese’s partners in the ‘Mind Yourself’ project include Aware – www.aware.ie, Church’s Ministry of Healing – www.ministryofhealing.ie, and Bishops’ Appeal – www.bishopsappeal.ireland.anglican.org

Directions to the cathedral may be found at https://bit.ly/2M6kIQh

On 12 May at 5am a group assembled to walk from St Columb’s cathedral, Derry, to St Columba’s church, Drumragh, in Omagh.  After a brief service the walkers, led by the Curate of Drumragh, the Revd Sean Hanily, set off for Omagh, breaking their journey at Newtownstewart. Around 30 walkers completed the full 36 miles, with many others joining on and doing long distances.  The walk was a major fundraising effort for urgent church repairs, the cost of which runs into the hundreds–of–thousands of pounds. Any future support would be greatly appreciated.
