Church of Ireland General Synod Begins Today
The General Synod of the Church of Ireland gets underway today (Thursday May 16) in the Millennium Forum, Derry/Londonderry. Over the coming three days, elected clergy and lay members along with the Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of Ireland will consider a range of Bills and Motions and receive the reports of a number of Church committees.
Before the formal business of the Synod gets underway, the Synod Eucharist takes place this morning in St Columb’s Cathedral at 10.30am. The preacher will be Bishop Ferran Glenfield and a collection will be taken for Bishops’ Appeal. Synod proceedings will begin at 12 noon. The Archbishop of Armagh’s Presidential Address will take place shortly after midday today.

There will be an audio broadcast during Synod and a Twitter feed using the hashtag #coigs. This hashtag will also be used for Facebook and Instagram as well as other social media outlets.
Tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday the Synod will begin in the Millennium Forum at 10am. Business will finish at 6.30pm on Thursday and 6pm on Friday and is scheduled to finish at 4.30pm on Saturday.
Each morning begins with a short act of worship, which this year will be led by the Synod Chaplain, the Revd Robert Boyd.
A reception for members of General Synod will be held in the Guildhall on this evening following the close of business.
St Augustine’s Church, on the Walls of Derry, will provide a light lunch at 1pm on today and tomorrow (Friday). The church will host the Council for Mission’s mission breakfast at 8am on Friday morning when Dr William Olhausen will speak on proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom. Silent prayer will also take place at St Augustine’s on Friday and Saturday mornings, also from 8am.
