Colloquium on Ministry

Developing Ministry: What is the Spirit Saying to the Church?’ is the subject for this year’s SEARCH Colloquium, which will be held on 30 March in TCD’s Long Room Hub. 

Canon David Hewlett, Principal of the Queen’s Foundation in Birmingham, and a former Lecturer in Systematic Theology in the Church of Ireland Theological College, will be the keynote speaker. Dr Hewlett’s theme will be ‘Radical Challenge and New Possibilities’. There will be contributions from Bishop Michael Burrows, Chairman of the Commission on Ministry, and the former Chairman, Bishop Ken Good, and responses from a panel of the Ven Andrew Forster, Canon Gillian Wharton, the Revd Rob Jones and the Revd Abigail Sines.

In the second session, ‘The Path to Effective Ministry’, there will be presentations on vocation by Canon David Gillespie and the Revd Cathy Hallissey, and on pathways to training by Canon Maurice Elliott, with responses from the Revd Dr William Olhausen, Canon Kevin, Ms Uta Raab, the Revd Willie Nixon and the Revd Lynne Gibson.

After lunch a session on ‘Deployment – the Right Person in the Right Place Under the Right Conditions’ – will be chaired by the Bishop of Derry with contributions from the Ven Wayne Carney, the Ven Robert Miller and the Very Revd Susan Green.

The final session will deal with support, spirituality and self–care for clergy and lay ministers. Chaired by the Ven Leslie Stephenson, this session will include contributions from the Revd Bruce Pierce, the Very Revd Maria Jansson, Ms Laurie Randall and Dom Mark Ephrem.To enrol for the one–day colloquium, please contact SEARCH‘s treasurer, Mr Michael Denton, at subscriptions@searchjournal.ireland.anglican.org. Church Music Dublin will host a workshop for all who enjoy singing the psalms and canticles to Anglican chant. It will be held in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, today (Saturday)  at 10 am, led by Ian Keatley, the cathedral’s director of music.

Tomorrow (Sunday) will be the Very Revd Gary Paulsen’s last service as Dean of Killaloe. He will be instituted to the incumbency of the Fermoy union of parishes in the Diocese of Cloyne on 7 April. In Down cathedral at 3pm Mrs June Butler will be commissioned as All–Ireland president of the Mothers’ Union.

Christ Church cathedral, Dublin’s candle–lit film series, concludes on Monday at  6.30 pm whenFire at Sea (2016) will be introduced by Nick Henderson, Chief Executive Officer, Irish Refugee Council. As always, the screenings are completely free of charge and all are most welcome. Doors open at 6.15pm and no booking is required.

On Tuesday the Archbishop of Dublin will be in Manchester for a three day meeting of the Anglican Jewish Commission of which he is the co–chair. The Dean of Armagh, the Very Revd Gregory Dunstan, will speak in Benburb Priory on ‘The King James Bible – an Icon of Anglicanism?’ at an event to mark the restoration of a 1680 King James Bible.

The lunchtime concert in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, on Wednesday will feature David Cantillon (clarinet), David Szabo (piano) and friends.

The AGM of the Church Education Society will be held on Thursday at 4.00pm, in Church of Ireland House, Dublin.

Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, will host a fun Easter Candle–Making Workshop on Saturday 13 April from 2–4pm, led by Tracy Johnson of Zoe Zoe Candles. Adults and children 10 years old and upwards are welcome. The workshop is free but normal cathedral admission applies. €2.50 for children, €7 for adults, which includes materials.
