Celebrations in Limerick

Today (Saturday), the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at 3.30pm, there will be a Service of Thanksgiving for 850th Anniversary of the foundation of St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick. The service will be the liturgical highlight of this year’s celebration which will pay particular attention to the role of the Cathedral within the life of the City of Limerick.

The guest preacher will be the Right Revd David Chillingworth, former Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church.  The Bishop of Limerick, the Most Revd Dr Brendan Leahy and the Mayor of Limerick, Councillor James Collins will participate in the service, along with representatives from various groups within city. 

St Mary’s which was a gift to the Church by Donal Mor O’Brien, the last King of Thomond, has been a site of Christian worship since 1168 and it one of the oldest buildings in Limerick city.  The service forms part of this year’s festivities which is celebrating and promoting the Cathedral within Limerick and beyond.  

The Dean, the Very Revd Niall Sloane, is looking forward to welcoming a number of former bishops of Limerick along with public and civic representatives.  All are welcome to attend.

This evening (Saturday) at 4pm in Christ Church cathedral, Waterford, the Revd Trevor Sargent will be ordained to the priesthood and will serve as curate of the Waterford union of parishes. Tomorrow (Sunday) at 4pm the Revd Alison Irvine will be priested in St Mary’s church, Maynooth, and will serve as a curate in the Dunboyne & Rathmolyon group of parishes while in Kilmore cathedral the Revd David Moses will ordained to the priesthood and will serve as curate of Drumgoon. Next Friday evening in St Patrick’s cathedral, Armagh the Archbishop of Armagh will ordain to the priesthood the Revd Graham Hare and the Revd Capt Geoffrey Walmsley who will serve in Drumglass and Dundalk respectively.

Tomorrow (Sunday) evening at 7pm there will be a special service to celebrate the 200th anniversary of St Andrew’s church, Rathdowney, at which the Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory will preach.

On Tuesday evening the Revd Diane Matchett will be instituted to the parishes of Kildress & Altedesert in the Diocese of Armagh while in the Diocese of Meath the Revd William Steacy will be instituted as Rector of the Athlone group of parishes. In St Nicholas’ Collegiate church on Friday evening the Revd Lynda Peilow will be instituted to the parishes of Galway & Kilcummin.

In Calary parish church, Co. Wicklow, at 8 pm on Wednesday, the Janet Ashe Memorial Concert will feature Fiachra Garvey (piano) playing works by Brahms, Chopin, Field, and Rachmaninov.

On Thursday afternoon, at 3pm in Brabazon House, Canon Horace McKinley will launch  Sailor, Airman, Spy. Memoir of a Cold War Veteran by Whitechurch parishioner, Ted Hayes.  All proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to support the work of the Brabazon Trust.

St Paul’s church, Cahir, Co Tipperary will host a Harvest weekend beginning next Friday during which an original Tyndale Bible and other interesting books will be displayed and informative talks given on the story of how the Bible came to be published in the English language. The weekend will begin with a concert by ‘Cahir to Sing’ and  a presentation by Mr Felix O’Neill, the owner of the Bible, at 8pm on Friday evening. The Harvest Thanksgiving will take place on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm. The display will be open to visitors from 10.00am – 5.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
