Prison chaplaincy appointment in Down and Dromore

Prison chaplaincy appointment in Down and Dromore

Bishop Harold Miller has appointed Mr David Jardine as the new combined Prison Chaplain in Hydebank Wood and Maghaberry Prison. Both facilities are situated in the Diocese of Down and Dromore.

In making the announcement Bishop Harold said: “I want in particular to thank the four people who have exercised roles in prison chaplaincy on behalf of the diocese over recent years: Canon Robert Howard, Revd Willie Nixon, Canon Jim Harron and Revd Leslie Spence. All of them have taken on chaplaincy responsibilities alongside parochial duties, and two of them continued to exercise a chaplaincy responsibility in their retirement.

“David Jardine is already working with former prisoners in the community, and will continue to do so alongside his new work. He has been accepted as one of the first students on the new Ordained Local Ministry course. We wish him every blessing in his new role.”

Speaking of his appointment David said: “I am excited to have the opportunity to minister with people across the two sites as part of the chaplaincy teams. I consider it a real privilege to be able to build relationships in an environment where not many are able to visit and to help guys know that they are loved by God. I will also be continuing to work in Willowfield heading up the Moving Forward project for young adults and hope that at times the two roles will come together and help support people to move forward to a new way of life following their release.”
