Being a Christian in the Holy Land

Canon Hatem Shedadeh from Haifa in the Diocese of Jerusalem, with which Dublin & Glendalough is partnered, will begin a visit on Monday. A number of public events will provide opportunities to learn more about the Diocese of Jerusalem and how deeper links can be formed. The visit has been organised by the Dublin & Glendalough Council for Mission – for more information contact krue@eircom.net

On Tuesday Canon Hatem will attend the St Ann’s parish lunch–time Eucharist celebrated by Canon David Gillespie at 12.45pm and on Wednesday morning there will be a visit to the Romanian Orthodox Parish of The Annunciation and All Saints at Broadstone.

On Wednesday afternoon at the Church of Ireland Theological College, Canon Hatem will meet clergy for conversation from 3.30 to 5pm. He will talk about a Christian identity in the Holy Land and there will be an opportunity to explore how parishes, schools and other organisations can develop links with their counterparts in the Diocese of Jerusalem. The Archbishop will preside at Holy Communion at 5pm to which clergy and lay participants are invited. This will be followed by an open evening beginning with dinner at 6pm which is free. Booking is not essential but, for catering purposes, the organisers would appreciate a response by emailing krue@eircom.net. After dinner there will be a chance to hear Canon Hatem tell of his own story and experience as a Palestinian living in Israel.

Canon Hatem will attend the Ministry of Healing Eucharist at Christ Church cathedral at 12.45pm on Thursday and in the evening he will be in Clonliffe College for a session of the Dublin Ecumenical Bible Week. On Friday at 5.00pm he will speak in St John’s church, Laragh, near to the monastic city of Glendalough. All are welcome to join him, Archbishop Jackson and the Rector, the Revd Brian O’Reilly, for a service of Evening Prayer.

This week Powerscourt National School celebrated 200 years of continuous teaching. The celebrations began on Monday with the pupils and staff visiting the old school in Enniskerry village dressed in period costume and by the burying of a time capsule in the school grounds on Wednesday. Grandparents’ Day was celebrated on Thursday along with a music concert in the church. A Celebratory Soiree took place in Powerscourt House and Gardens last night (Friday) and tomorrow (Sunday) the Archbishop will be leading a special Family Service in Powerscourt Church at 11.30 am followed by Family Fun Day in the Church Field.
