Cork Church of Ireland primary schools – new ‘Prayer Leaf’ link with hospital chaplaincy
The Chapel of Christ the Healer at Cork University Hospital has launched a new ‘Prayer Leaf’ project with the primary schools in the Dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. This venture is providing primary school children with an opportunity to offer a tangible contribution of prayer leaves to be used by patients, visitors and staff at Cork University Hospital.
The Chapel of Christ the Healer, located on the main concourse of Cork University Hospital, has many visitors every day and is an oasis of calm in the midst of one of Ireland’s busiest hospitals.
Primary school children across the diocese are invited to make prayer leaves as part of an outreach initiative between schools and healthcare chaplaincy where children can reflect on health and illness. An educational pack with lesson plans for both Junior Infants – 2nd class and 3rd class–6th class – have been provided by Ms Jacqui Wilkinson, Lecturer in Religious Education at Dublin City University, to complement the existing Follow Me© Religious Education programme. A school assembly outline has also been produced.
Canon Daniel Nuzum, one of the Hospital Chaplains at Cork University Hospital, said: ‘We are delighted to offer this opportunity for school children to connect in a prayerful and tangible way with our patients and hospital community. The prayer leaves have proved very popular and mean a lot to many who call into the Chapel of Christ the Healer to pray for a loved one who is ill. I am grateful to Jacqui Wilkinson for her generous work to embed this project as a learning initiative for school pupils.’
