Exhibition in Limerick Cathedral

An exhibition of Limerick silver and lace is the latest event to mark the 850th anniversary of the founding of St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick.  During the month of May, the cathedral will celebrate Limerick arts and crafts and the exhibition on Limerick silver and lace has been brought together to showcase and highlight some of the city’s indigenous crafts. Limerick silver, which was the subject of a splendid exhibition in the Hunt Museum in 2007, curated by John R Bowen, currently Master Warden of the Dublin Company of Goldsmiths, is rare and much sought after.  Most of the silver in the exhibition is in the possession of the cathedral, under the care of the Canon Treasurer, Canon Jane Galbraith.  Limerick lace is highly regarded across the world.  The lace in the exhibition is kindly on lean from Limerick Museum and Limerick City Trust.  The exhibition runs for the month of May and full details are available from the cathedral website: www.cathedral.limerick.anglican.org

On Wednesday the lunchtime concert in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, will be given by pianist Stuart O’Sullivan.

Today (Saturday), the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross will attend the National Commemoration of the Great Famine which is being hosted this year in University College Cork, and at which the keynote address will be given by the President of Ireland.  The Archbishop of Dublin will be represented by the Very Revd Victor Stacey.  On Thursday, Dr Colton will address the Ross Historical Society on the subject of the forthcoming centenary of commemorations in Ireland.

On Tuesday, a ‘Walk, Word and Witness for Fields of Life’ will begin, to continue until the following Saturday.  The Revd Andrew Quill, Rector of Dromore, and others will undertake a sponsored walk over 76 miles from St Fin Barre’s Church, Carrickmacross, to Templecarne church, Pettigo, with servies en route in Christ Church, Ballybay, St Macartan’s Cathedral, Clogher, Holy Trinity, Dromore, Colaghty, Lack and Templecarne.  The Fields of Life Project, which began working in Uganda in 1995 to develop education, child sponsorship and the provision of clean water, is supported by the Diocese of Clogher. Next Friday, the annual ‘Pictures at the Priory’ exhibition begins at Kells Rectory, Co. Kilkenny, and continues until the following Sunday.

A celebratory evening is being organised in recognition of the life and ministry of Canon Liz McElhinney.  It will be held in the Kilbride Community Centre, Fourmile House, Roscommon, on Friday evening at 8pm.  The event will feature readings from a selection of Liz’s inspirational poems by actor Ian McElhinney. In addition, there will be musical contributions from the All–Ireland award winnings Mercy Convent School Choir, Roscommon, the local cross–community CorComain, soloist Nicola Brown and traditional music–led by the Revd Sean Hanily, a Roscommon man now serving in Dublin.  Bishop Ken Clarke will compete the evening.  The proceeds will be donated to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The Board of the Church of Ireland Press Limited, publisher of the Church of Ireland Gazette, has announced the retirement of Canon John Auchmuty, who has served on the board for 15 years, the last five of these in the role of Chairman.  During this time, Canon Auchmuty has guided the board through a period of change that has seen the Gazette appear in both tabloid and electronic format and, in the last year, appoint a new Editor and Assistant Editor, and prepare for a relaunch of the publication in January 2019.  The Gazette has carried news and comment about the Church of Ireland since 1856.
