The rector of St Columba’s, Knock, Canon John Auchmuty, has stepped down as Chairman of Church of Ireland Press Ltd. He will be succeeded by Mr Adrian Clements, former Secretary General and Chief Officer of the Representative Church Body.

The Board of Church of Ireland Press Limited said in a statement: “The Board of Church of Ireland Press Limited would like to record its sincere thanks to the Revd Canon John Auchmuty, who has served on the Board for 15 years, the last five of these in the role of Chairman. During this time, John has guided the Board through a period of change that has seen the Gazette appear in both tabloid and electronic format and, in the last year, appoint a new Editor, Assistant Editor and prepare for a relaunch of the publication in January 2019. The Gazette has carried news and comment about the Church of Ireland since 1856.”

Canon Auchmuty said: “I have very much enjoyed my years serving on the Board of the Church of Ireland Press Ltd. It has been a great privilege to have worked with such dedicated and committed colleagues.

“The Gazette has a fresh opportunity through its relaunch in January to strengthen its connection with the Church as it seeks to offer blessing and encouragement through its pages. Having been very much involved in the early preparation for this exciting new phase of the Gazette’s development, I feel the time is now right to make way for a new Chair.

“I would like to thank my colleagues, the Editors and Staff past and present for their trust, loyalty and friendship generously given throughout my tenure. I also want to thank the Chief Officer and Secretary General of the RCB, Mr David Ritchie, along with those in the central structures of the Church that have also offered encouragement and support over the years. I wish my successor, Adrian Clements well in his new role and the Gazette every success for the future where I will remain a constant supporter.”

Speaking on behalf of the Board, incoming Chairperson Adrian Clements (right) said: “I am sincerely thankful to John for his fine leadership of the Board and I look forward to exciting times ahead for the Gazette.”
