24–mile round trip for St Swithin’s cyclists

24–mile round trip for St Swithin’s cyclists

It was a lovely November morning that welcomed 16 brave souls (including Archdeacon Terry and Mrs Alison Scott) from St Swithin’s Magherafelt to the Scarva visitor centre, as they prepared for their 24–mile round trip along the Newry Canal towpath from Scarva to Newry and back.

As well as a good way to have fun and fellowship together, the group were aiming to raise sponsorship monies for their church restoration fund. With saddles, helmets and lycra all well adjusted, the group set off on their great adventure, with the Diocesan Communications Officer in tow. Those who have used the Newry Canal towpath will be well accustomed to the scenic beauty of the surrounding landscape, not to mention the odd loud rumble of the Dublin/Belfast Enterprise train racing past. The pace of the riders was somewhat more sedate as they made their way past Acton lake, Poyntzpass, Drumbanagher, Jerretspass and onward towards Newry.
