A Walk with St Willibrord
Today (Saturday) the Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory, the Rt Revd Michael Burrows, will join the Most Revd Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin, as the relic of St. Willibrord, Patron Saint of Luxembourg, is walked between Carlow’s two cathedrals via the Barrow Way. St Willibrord is one of the most important saints in Europe and he has appeal across the many Christian communities particularly for Catholics, Anglicans and Old Catholics.
On the 5th of June 2017, while in Echternach, a group of 40 people from the Leighlin dioceses, led by Bishop Nulty and Bishop Burrows, were presented with a ‘Relic of St Willibrord’ for display in Carlow. A group of thirty people from Echternach will now travel to Carlow and as part of their visit they, along with people from Leighlin dioceses and beyond, will ‘Walk with Willibrord’ as the relic will be walked in an 11 km public procession along the Barrow Way from St Laserian’s cathedral, Old Leighlin, to the Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow, where it will be permanently housed.

To mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation a major ecumenical conference will be held today (Saturday) in the Church of St John the Baptist, Seafield Road, Clontarf. The facilitator for the day will be Philip McKinley, and there will be contributions from Dr. Gesa Thiessen (TCD) Dr. Andrew Pierce (ISE), Fr. Gabriel Daly OSA and Gillian Kingston (Interim Vice President of the World Methodist Council).
The Reformation theme continues this evening at 7.30pm in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, where as part of the Pipeworks organ festival, the Mornington Singers, with Gerben Mourik at the organ, will perform works by Martin Luther. The Mornington Singers’ new CD, ‘Under–Song’, recorded early this year in the Church of St John the Baptist, Clontarf, features works by modern Irish composers and is available through their website – www.morningtonsingers.org
This morning (Saturday) Changing Attitude Ireland will hold an Ecumenical Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance at 11.30am in St. Audoen’s church, Cornmarket, Dublin. Singing will be led by the Gay Men’s Chorus and a small number of married same–sex couples will give thanks for the support they have received. All are welcome to join the worship.
Tomorrow (Sunday) the choir of St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, will sing Evensong in St Cronan’s church, Roscrea. In the evening, at 8pm, there will be a concert in Calary church, Co. Wicklow, where the Delmaine String Quartet will present ‘The Waterloo Concert’ with music, song, poetry and prose reflecting the great battle. It will incorporate works by Shostakovich, Beethoven and Schubert alongside pieces composed by the Duke’s own father, Garret Wellesley, who was the first professor of music at Trinity College. The lunchtime concert in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, on Wednesday, beginning at 1.15pm, will be given by cellist Frank Schaefer accompanied by pianist Ethna Tinney. Their programme will include music by Brahms and Saint–Saens.
On Thursday, St Pater’s Day, the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross, Dr Paul Colton, will preside at a celebration of the Eucharist on St Fin Barre’s cathedral where a the new Diocesan Council will be commissioned.
‘Summer Music at Sandford’ continues at lunchtime on Friday when the male voice ensemble, Shepard Singers, will give a recital of works by John Sheppard and William Byrd. The recital begins at 1.10pm.
