New Editor of the Gazette

The Church of Ireland Gazette has announced the appointment of a new Editor, the Revd Earl Storey, who will take up the appointment on 1 June as successor to Canon Ian Ellis who is stepping down from his sixteen–year tenure with the Gazette.

The Revd Earl Storey was ordained in 1982 for the curacy of Drumglass in the Diocese of Armagh and subsequently was incumbent in Crinken in the Diocese of Dublin and Glenavy in the Diocese of Connor. More recently, he has been  Diocesan Communications Officer in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe, and DCO for Meath & Kildare. With over 30 years’ experience, including communications and publishing, he will bring a breadth of experience to the Gazette.

The newly appointed Editor will not only be able to build on the legacy of the Gazette, but will also be able to bring his unique combination of communications skills and experience of wider church matters to the role.  He will be working closely with a new Editorial Advisory Committee which is tasked with supporting the Editor in developing a fresh vision for a vibrant modern journal, designed to appeal to readers of all ages and interests.

The Mornington Singers will hold a concert To the Northeast this evening (Saturday) in St. Ann’s church, Dublin, at 8pm. The programme of contemporary choral music from Ireland, will include premieres of two new works: ‘To the Northeast’ by John Buckley (commissioned by Mornington Singers with the support of the Arts Council of Ireland) and the very moving ‘World War 1 Letters’ by Ben Hanlon.

At 8.15 pm in the Church of the Assumption, Luggacurran, Co. Laois, the former Dean of Cashel, Dr Philip Knowles will accompany the In Cantorum Choral Group from Athy, Co. Kildare, in a concert directed by Eileen Doyle.

This year marks the 130th anniversary of the Mothers Union in Ireland. As part of the celebrations, All–Ireland MU President Phyllis Grothier is visiting every branch. Her pilgrimage started with a visit to All Saints Raheny, where the first MU branch was created, and will culminate tomorrow (Sunday) with a celebration service at 12 noon in St. Patrick’s church, Kenmare, the home of the newest branch. The service will be jointly led by Canon Jane Galbraith, Diocesan MU Chaplain, and Priest–in–Charge, the Revd Michael Cavanagh. The preacher will be the Rt Revd Andrew Proud, Bishop of Reading and MU Chaplain.

Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon in Christ Church, Bray, the  Archbishop of Dublin will officiate at the Service of Celebration for the Girls Friendly Society’s 140 years in Ireland.

At Evensong in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, the Revd Gillian Wharton, will be installed as Prebendary of Dunlavin.

Dublin’s annual IDAHOT (International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia) service will be held tomorrow (Sunday) at 3.30pm in Christ Church cathedral. At this service the Rt Revd Walton Empey will be welcomed as a patron of Changing Attitude Ireland in succession to the late Dean Victor Griffin. The preacher will be the Revd Dr Brendan McCarthy, who is currently the national advisor to the Church of England on medical ethics and also priest–in–charge of Manorhamilton in the Diocese of Kilmore. Cork is hosting a similar service at 10.15am tomorrow (Sunday) at St Anne’s Shandon, where the preacher will be the Revd Elaine Murray, Rector of Carrigaline.

On Thursday evening the Archbishop of Dublin will be preside at the 150th anniversary service in St. Bartholomew’s church, Clyde Road. The Archbishop of Armagh, a former curate of St Bartholomew’s, will be the preacher.
