Installation of Dean of St Patrick’s

This afternoon (Saturday) during Evensong in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, the Very Revd Dr William Morton will be installed as Dean. The service will be attended by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, members of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann, civic, diplomatic and religious representatives, members of the Chapter and those who worship at St Patrick’s Cathedral.  The preacher at the service will be the former Archdeacon of Raphoe, the Venerable Scott Harte.

Dr Morton was elected Dean of St Patrick’s on 9 May this year by the members of the Cathedral Chapter following the retirement of the Very Revd Victor Stacey.  He was ordained in 1988 for the curacy of Drumachose in the Diocese of Derry and in 1991 moved to the Diocese of Raphoe to be Rector of Conwal. Since 1997 he has been Dean of Derry where he has overseen substantial renovation works in St Columb’s Cathedral and where he has been a prominent figure in the public life of the city. Dr Morton has been a member Chapter of St Patrick’s cathedral as Prebendary of Howth since 2013.

Today (Saturday), the Annual Lecture of the Biblical Association of the Church of Ireland will be held in Kill o’ the Grange parish hall at 10am when Dr David Shepherd from TCD’s Loyola Institute will speak on ‘Rethinking Refugees: Old Testament Wisdom for a World in Turmoil’. The lecture will be followed by the BACI AGM.

The autumn season of diocesan synods begins today (Saturday) with the Tuam, Killala & Achonry Synod in Tuam. On Wednesday the Connor Synod will be held in Carrickfergus Methodist Church and on Thursday the Clogher Synod will meet in Monaghan.

Tomorrow (Sunday) morning the Bishop of Cork will preside at the Patronal Festival Service in St Fin Barre’s cathedral where the preacher will be the Dean of Christ Church, Dublin, the Very Revd Dermot Dunne. In the afternoon, at 3.30 pm in Christ Church cathedral, the Archbishop of Dublin will raise two deacons to the priesthood. The Revd Kevin Conroy will serve as curate in Dalkey and the Revd Nigel Pierpont will be curate in Taney. The address at the service will be given by Dr Mary McAleese. In the evening, at 8pm, David Leigh will continue with his series of organ recitals in St Patrick’s cathedral, Dublin, to mark the centenary of the death of Max Reger.

On Wednesday the lunchtime organ recital in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, will be given by Peter Barley. This recital is part of the closing weekend of this year’s Limerick Pipe Organ Festival, which also includes a masterclass and recital by Martin Baker and workshop by Trevor Crowe – details at info@lpof.ie or www.lpof.ie. In the evening the Mothers’ Union Diocesan Festival Service will be held in St Columb’s cathedral where the Bishop of Derry will preside.

In Co. Tyrone the 200th anniversary of the consecration of St Mark’s church, Newtownsaville, will be marked by a Commemorative Service next Thursday morning and on Friday afternoon the First Minister of Northern Ireland, Ms Arlene Foster, will open a Flower Festival in Tempo parish church, Co. Fermanagh.

Drumcondra and North Strand are celebrating 120 years of the union of their parishes with a wedding outfit exhibition. The exhibition will feature wedding outfits down through the decades as well as a display of wedding photographs. It will take place in North Strand Church, North Strand Road, Dublin, next Friday until Sunday 2 October.
