Safeguarding conference to focus on role of churches

Thirty Church of Ireland representatives will take part in a Safeguarding Board’s conference on ‘The Role of Faith Communities in Safeguarding Children in Northern Ireland’ on Thursday, 2nd June.  The board co–ordinates the work undertaken by its member organisations to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in Northern Ireland.

The event, in Wellington Presbyterian Church, Ballymena, will explore the role of churches in safeguarding children and also highlight good practice and the challenges involved.  It will be hosted by the Safeguarding Board’s Inter Faith Sub Group and delegates will be nominated by the Church of Ireland bishops for dioceses covering Northern Ireland.

Speakers will include the Rt Revd Mark Sowerby, Bishop of Horsham, and Mrs Glenys Johnston OBE, Interim Independent Chair of the Safeguarding Board, and Dr Melissa Darmody and Ms Una Allen, from Towards Healing, a counselling and support service for victims of abuse.
