Church of Ireland notes from “The Irish Times”

The Church & Europe
The Church of Ireland belongs to a number of ecumenical bodies, and the benefits of membership include opportunities to share in, and contribute to the thinking of a wide range of Churches both in Ireland and elsewhere. One of these bodies is the Conference of European Churches (CEC), whose headquarters are in Brussels, and which describes itself as comprising the Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant Churches of Europe. The  Church of Ireland is a full member of CEC in its own right,  as well as through the Irish Council of Churches. The Church and Society Commission of CEC, which maintains a close relationship with the institutions of the European Union, and with COMECE, the Roman Catholic commission, holds regular meetings of the secretaries of  ecumenical secretaries of the member Churches, most recently in Strasbourg, which was attended by Dr Kenneth Milne.  The main theme of the meeting was the topic of human rights and its ramifications, and delegates were asked to identify present concerns of their Churches in this area. Much material has been produced by Church–related and other sources, which could be relevant to the conference that the Church of Ireland bishops have indicated is to be held in Ireland next Spring. It is also worth noting that CEC is likely to be the mechanism through which the Churches will be enabled to participate in the newly–introduced ‘Citizens’ initiative’ whereby the concerns of the citizens of the member states of the Union can be brought to bear on the European Commission itself
