Liturgical Advisory Committee

Liturgical Advisory Committee News, November 2010

The Liturgical Advisory Committee held its two day residential meeting on 2nd and 3rd November 2010 which, as is the nature of residential meetings, provided an opportunity for more in depth consideration of a wider range of liturgical matters than is afforded by the one day meetings.

During the course of the meeting the official launch took place of the document LITURGICAL SPACE AND CHURCH REORDERING – ISSUES OF GOOD PRACTICE, details of which can be found by following the link www.ireland.anglican.org/news/LAC.

The afternoon of the first day provided an opportunity for the sub-groups to meet to review items delegated to them by the Committee. One development in the constitution of those groups was the amalgamation of the Electronic Liturgy Group with the Resources Group. It has long been the intention that once the Worship Website was established, resource material (and in particular that contained in the Resources Manual distributed to clergy a number of years ago) would be made available electronically. Therefore it seemed appropriate that, at this point in the development of the website, the two groups combine. The Resource Manual contents can be found via the following link www.ireland.anglican.org/worship/resourcemanual.

The launch of Singing Psalms Year A was discussed, the result of which can be seen at www.ireland.anglican.org/news/LAC.  This sees the completion of four year’s work by the LAC, and in particular Alison Cadden and the Revd Peter Thompson, to whom the Committee expressed it sincere thanks. This third volume is again published by The Columba Press, and is available price £12.99 from the Good Bookshop, Belfast or €17.99 from the Resource Centre, Rathmines, Dublin.

A great deal of time has been spent considering a Eucharistic prayer that may be used when a congregation comprise a significant number of children. Following further revision it was agreed that the current draft be submitted to the House of Bishops for their consideration, with a view to receiving their formal approval for it being available to parishes for experimental use in the New Year.

Other items discussed were Eucharistic Provision for those with Coeliac Disease; a supplement to Church Hymnal 5, and in discussion with Ms Janet Maxwell who kindly joined the meeting on the Wednesday morning, what provision was likely to be made now that the full music edition was out of print.

Finally, the Committee noted the appointment of one of its former members, the Revd Christopher Woods, as successor to Peter Moger to the post of Secretary to the Church of England’s Liturgical Commission and National Worship Development Officer.

The next meeting of the Committee is planned for January 27th 2011 in Church of Ireland House, Dublin.
