Liturgical Advisory Committee

Liturgical Advisory Committee News, October 2010

The Liturgical Advisory Committee has met three times this year in Church of Ireland House Dublin, on January 29th, May 18th and September 28th.

At the January meeting a varied agenda was complemented in the afternoon by a guest speaker, the Revd Peter Moger, then Secretary to the Church or England’s Liturgical Commission and Worship Development Officer for the Church of England. His presentation focused on the history of liturgical revision within the Church of England, leading up to the publication of the Common Worship volumes, the Transforming Worship website, and the current work on liturgical formation and liturgical resources. A valuable discussion followed, at the conclusion of which the Committee noted its appreciation of the role of the Church of England Liturgical Commission, in particular the resources it had made freely available to the wider Church community through the Common Worship and Transforming Worship websites. Earlier in the day the Committee looked at furthering the discussion on Eucharistic prayers for use where children comprise a major part of the congregation. The paper on Use of Liturgical Space was given its final approval before being presented to General Synod, as was the LAC’s report to General Synod.

At its meeting in May one of the first tasks was the appointment of consultants and co-opted members to the LAC. A full list of the LAC membership can be found below. The meeting also heard reports from the sub-committees working on the “Singing Psalms” project, a paper on guidelines for the liturgical use of oil, further work on Eucharistic Prayers with children and the provision of further Resource Material. A report from the 4 Nations Liturgical Group was also received.

Last month’s meeting welcomed Jim Conlon to his first meeting as the CITI representative. In the course of the meeting the Committee finalized the paper on “Guidelines re the Liturgical Use of Oil” which is to be made available to all serving clergy and uploaded to the Resource section of the Worship webpage. Having received approval from General Synod, the launch of the paper on the Use of Liturgical Space was considered, and further work on Eucharistic prayers for use where children comprise a major part of the congregation gave that sub-committee a draft to work on for the next meeting. A paper suggesting guidelines for Holy Communion and Coeliac Disease was presented and will be considered in detail at the next meeting, which will take place on 2nd – 3rd November.
