Bishop' Appeal Disappointed at Cut in Ireland's Overseas Aid Budget
Ireland has been a generous donor of overseas aid, becoming one of the most generous in the European Union. It is therefore very disappointing that the Irish government has decided to cut €45 million from the already agreed aid budget for this year. This will hurt the poorest people in the world who need our generosity more than ever at a time of significantly increased food and energy costs.
Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal, the Church’s World Aid and Development Programme, regrets this decision. Bishops’ Appeal calls on An Taoiseach and the Minister for Finance to reconfirm the commitment made in 2005 to contribute 0.7% of Gross Domestic Product in Overseas Aid by 2012.
