Bishops' Appeal - Emergency grant aid for earthquake relief
The Archbishops of Armagh and Dublin have authorised an emergency grant of £20,000 from the Church of Ireland Bishops' Appeal to assist the relief work in the Indian state of Gujarat following the massive destruction caused by the earthquake.
The grant will assist the work of the Churches' Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA). CASA, the development wing of the Protestant churches in India, has been implementing relief and development programmes in the country for 50 years and is a long standing partner of Christian Aid. It has been able to respond fairly rapidly with distribution of relief items to approximately 35,000 of the most vulnerable families. Priority will be given to women, children, and the elderly. Each family will be given relief sets with essential items. These will consist of the following: A saree, dhoti, one acrylic handloom blanket and a set of kitchen utensils, a lantern and tarpaulin piece. Cooked food and drinking water is being provided for 600,000 people for 6 days. The dry ration kit will be made up of 7kg rice, 2kg flour, 1kg dal, 1 litre mustard oil, matchbox and candles.
Bishops' Appeal will forward to CASA contributions received from parishes and individuals.
