Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

CIYD Event

The Church of Ireland Youth Department’s next ‘Connect Day’ will be on Monday, 20 November, in the Canal Court Hotel, Newry, from 9.30am until 1pm and will take the form of aYouth Suicide Awareness Training event. CIYD will  welcome Susie Mapledoram, who is the Diocesan Youth Officer in Manchester Diocese. Susie has recently completed formal  training in this pertinent area of youth ministry and working with young people.

Suicide, suicide ideation and associated areas of mental health with young people are often seen as taboo subjects for our churches but as we know as practitioners in the field, awareness and training are vital to support and protect young people.

Those who are interested are urged to come along and mark for the date in their diaries. There will be coffee and scones as usual to start and the event will finish with lunch.

Eco–Congregation Ireland will host an online gathering for all friends in the Leinster region!

This morning from 10.00am  until 11.00am. This event is open to those in Leinster who are interested in learning how to start their church’s eco journey, work towards their ECI Award and develop their work into the future. Ther will be contributions  from faith communities who have received their ECI Award. They will tell how they began their journey and how they have continued their work for God’s creation. There will be an opportunity for discussion, questions and ideas sharing. If you would like to attend contact  to info@ecocongregationireland.com to book a place and you will be sent the zoom link.

Eco–Congregation Ireland is an initiative of the Irish Inter Church Meeting, and includes members from the Roman Catholic Church, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian Church, Methodist Church and Religious Society of Friends.

Tomorrow (Sunday )is Remembrance Sunday, when Churches of Ireland communities gather to recall the sacrifices made by many in times of war and other conflicts at home and abroad. In parish churches and cathedrals throughout the land there will be special services and acts of remembrance.

November’s first lunchtime concert in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, will take place at 1.15pm on Tuesday. Soprano, Lorraine Galvin, will be accompanied by Irina Dernova on piano. On Thursday  the annual corporate lunch of Saint Luke’s Charity, Cork, will be held. The President of the  Charity, the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne & Ross, Dr Paul Colton, will attend.

Choral Compline will be sung in Sandford parish church, Ranelagh on Friday at 6pm.

Mishkins, a story the late Revd Cecil Wilson told to his daughters when they were children, has been released as a book with the proceeds of all sales going to CMSI. Cecil, who died in February 2022, served 32 years of his ministry with CMS Ireland, first as Youth Secretary and then as General Secretary. Suitable for children aged 10 and upwards, Mishkins is the story of a very unusual cuddly toy set in 19th century England and Africa, a continent Cecil loved and visited often.
