Western Peregrination
The Bishop of Tuam, Limerick & Killaloe, the Rt Revd Michael Burrows, has embarked on an ‘Autumn Peregrination’ across his dioceses. Conscious that the Diocesan Council for Mission in Limerick and Killaloe had a long established custom of supporting an overseas development project around Mission Sunday at the end of November, he has sought to harness this tradition and build on a similar tradition of generosity in the Diocese of Tuam.
The peregrination, ‘Empowering Women through Literacy’ will aim to raise funds for two project which will be supported by the Bishops’ Appeal. The first project will involve a partnership with the Mothers’ Union to advance womens’ literacy in Burundi, The second will be a partnership with Feed the Minds to educate women to run self– sustaining silk businesses in Madagascar.
The format of the peregrination will see the Bishop visit every church in the dioceses at a specific time, engaging with those who gather to sing a sponsored hymn, with Bishop on the organ. The hymn, ‘Christ is the King. O Friends Rejoice’ has been selected by the Bishop as in much of the diocese Mission Sunday is observed on the Feast of Chrost the King, 26 November, which falls in the middle of the peregrination.
The peregrination began on 13 November in Templederry and will conclude in Claremorris on 1 December.
This evening (Saturday) at 6pm the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, will licence Diocesan Lay Readers at a service in Christ Church cathedral.
The second lunchtime concert for November in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick, will take place from 1.15pm on Tuesday. Soprano, Eve Stafford. will be accompanied by Irina Dernova on piano, performing music by Purcell, Michael Head, Fiona Linnane and Bizet. Admission to the concerts is free with a retiring collection. On Thursday morning, at the invitation of the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste the Archbishop of Dublin will attend an event at The Mansion House when the Lord Mayor will share his vision of Dublin – City of Kindness as a key objective of his term in office.
The grouped parishes of Sandford & St Philip’s, Milltown, will have Choral Compline, a short service of evening prayer, sung in Sandford parish church on Friday evenings in November at 6pm. All are welcome to come to this beautiful meditative service, which provides a welcome respite from the busy Friday rush–hour.
The Church’s Ministry of Healing: Ireland has announced details of this year’s Advent Retreat at the request of the Commission on Ministry. The retreat takes place in Mount St Anne’s Retreat Centre, Portarlington, Co. Laois, and is open to all. It runs from the evening of 24th November to lunchtime on 26th November, and the cost is €150, which includes accommodation and meals. The Very Revd Paul Draper, Dean of Lismore, and Ms Lydia Monds, CMH:I Ministry Leader, are the facilitators of this year’s retreat, which will use poetry, mindful reflection, silence, and discussion to provide a thoughtful time of healing and meditative prayerfulness.
