Visit of Tánaiste Micheál Martin TD to Armagh

On Thursday 12th January 2023, the Dean of Armagh, the Very Revd Shane Forster, had the opportunity and privilege to escort Tánaiste Micheál Martin TD on a guided tour of St Patrick’s Cathedral.  The Tánaiste was in the ecclesiastical capital for the launch of the Irish Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs new €3 million Shared Island Civic Society Fund.  The launch event took place in Armagh Robinson Library where the Dean also holds the title of Keeper.

At the Cathedral, the Tánaiste had the opportunity to visit the burial place of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, and to see the various monuments and memorials relating to former Archbishops.

Prior to the Cathedral visit the Tánaiste met with representatives of both Armagh Robinson Library and the Cardinal Tomas Ó Fiaich Library and Archive.  Both institutions are currently being supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs Reconciliation Fund in a project to preserve and curate the papers of former Church of Ireland Primate, the Right Revd the Lord Eames OM, and of the late Cardinal Tomas Ó Fiaich.  As the Tánaiste commented in his keynote speech in the Library, ‘Each played instrumental roles in the process of peace and reconciliation.’
