In congratulating James on his appointment as Cathedral Architect, the Dean of Saint Patrick’s, Dr William Morton, says: “I am looking forward to working closely with James on the many projects to maintain, and conserve, the wonderful ecclesiastical treasure, and architectural gem, which is Saint Patrick’s, the National Cathedral of The Church of Ireland. James brings to his new role a wealth of experience in conservation architecture together with innovation and flair in identifying, and responding to the requirements of, new projects. I wish him every success as Cathedral Architect.”

The Cathedral’s Fabric Committee Chair George Good says: “The care of our historic fabric is a key task of the Cathedral Board, and our architect is central to the ongoing repair and conservation of our magnificent buildings. We on the fabric committee are delighted with the appointment of James Howley of Howley Hayes Cooney as Cathedral architect and we very much look forward to working with him in the years ahead.”

Cathedral Administrator (CEO) Gavan Woods says: “After a pause following the completion of the roofing project we are looking forward to once again undertaking the important work of conserving and protecting our magnificent buildings. The role of Cathedral Architect is an important one and so we are very pleased that James Howley has accepted the position and will begin his duties with us here from early January. As he builds on the legacy of his predecessors, he will no doubt bring his own vision to the important tasks that lie ahead.”

James Howley resumes the role of Cathedral Architect previously held by John Beauchamp, B2 Architects, who retired in September 2022 after 20 years with Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.
