Statement of the Archbishop of Dublin following the death of Queen Elizabeth II

The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr Michael Jackson, has issued the following statement following the announcement this evening of the death of Queen Elizabeth II:

“On behalf of the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough I wish to extend condolences to all the members of the family of Queen Elizabeth II. Her recent death has deprived them not only of the head of state but of the head of their family.

“As a head of state Queen Elizabeth was a figure of international renown. She was much respected and held in significant affection at home and across the world. She was a person who set a shining and consistent example of duty, service and care as someone who put the public good above personal considerations.

“She will also be remembered as a person of great faith and was never ashamed to speak directly of Godly motivation in her guiding principles and in her actions. In recent years, as society has become progressively more secular, Queen Elizabeth consistently proclaimed her Christian faith and was determined that this voice be heard, not least in her annual Christmas message.

“Queen Elizabeth visited Ireland on a number of occasions. Every time she did so, she found her way to the hearts of the Irish people in any context where she met them.

“Our sympathies go to the people of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in particular and to all others most deeply affected by the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.

“May she rest in peace.”
