Prayers and Book of Peace for Ukraine at St Patrick’s

Pray for peace in support of those suffering as a result of recent attacks on Ukraine and sign the Book of Peace

On Ash Wednesday, 2 March, a Choral Evensong will take place at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, followed by a Peace Vigil in support of those suffering as a result of the recent attacks on Ukraine. 

All are welcome to join on the evening. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Alison Gilliland, who will be in attendance notes: “Let us, the people of Dublin, stand steadfast in solidarity with our neighbours in Ukraine; for in doing this we show the world the resilience, the tolerance and the neighbourliness that make us what we are.”

Following Choral Evensong, Books of Peace will be available for all to sign. The key times are as follows:

5.30pm: Choral Evensong service followed by Lord Mayor’s address

6.30pm – 9.00pm: Peace Vigil and Book of Peace signing

The Cathedral’s Dean, the Very Revd Dr William Morton, comments: “We find God’s presence in the ancient liturgies of our Church through words, spoken and sung, and in prayers offered personally and collectively to God, especially when we remember those in crisis situations.

“We appreciate those who will come together in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral to offer up prayers for the plight of the people of Ukraine at this time. May those who have been bereaved and injured, and who exist under fear and despair, find God’s peace in response to the prayers offered on their behalf.”

The Irish Red Cross will be taking donations in the Cathedral on the evening for those in need of urgent support. Secretary General, Liam O’Dwyer, says ahead of the event: “In reflecting on the day of Ash Wednesday we are reflecting on our own humanity our strengths and vulnerabilities. Our humanity brings us together with our families, communities and citizens around the world building solidarity and peace.

“For the people of Ukraine they need this solidarity at this time, to know that people around the world are concerned for them and thinking of them and want to help. If you can, please give whatever you can, to support people in Ukraine and let them know through the work of Red Cross people on the ground that you care.”

Those wishing to attend Choral Evensong should arrive no later than 5.20pm. The Books of Peace will remain available to sign for the coming weeks, and the Cathedral will remain open until 9.00pm on 2 March for quiet reflection. Search for #SPCprayforpeace on social media for updates.
