Staying safe online
Childline has produced a range of quick guides for young people which deal with some of the dangers which can be caused when the internet is misused. These cover cyber–bullying, online gaming, and mobile phone safety are available at this link.
Advice and tips tailored for young people, parents, carers and teachers are available at the UK Safer Internet Centre website (www.saferinternet.org.uk) and on www.webwise.ie
Our own social media guidelines encourage everyone in the Church to help keep others safe online, show responsibility and courtesy, tell people who they are, and remember that posts can be public and permanent. Find out more at this link.
Protecting children and young people from harm as digital media changes and develops, is a key part of our safeguarding responsibilities in the Church. We’re all on a learning curve as society becomes more digital but as always, we’re called to treat other people as we would wish to be treated. Showing care and respect for others in what we say and do online is part of our discipleship as followers of Jesus.
