Helping the planet: ‘Wear Your Wellies to Church Sundays’ resume in Carlow
Children in Carlow Union of Parishes have seen their favourite Sunday Club session – Wear Your Wellies to Church Sundays – recommence.
Hand–weeding the St Mary’s Church grounds as well as planting and saving seeds were part of the children’s tasks on these special Sundays in recent months, with the sun shining on their first day back to face–to–face Sunday Club since early 2020, their leader Carolyn Good says.
“We stayed in contact through lockdowns and church building closures and our kids took part in remote projects marking Christmas and Easter while we couldn’t see each other. We started (our return to church in St Mary’s) with our favourite session, a Wear your Wellies to Church Sunday!
“This type of session worked really well with Covid measures as we planned to be outdoors in the fresh air and we worked in small groups. We talked about how people should care for the earth, starting with the environment around us.
“Eleven children, three teenage leaders and three adult leaders planted more daffodil bulbs. We are trying not to use weed killer in our church grounds so we worked together to hand weed areas. We also talked about how we can use our own seeds to grow new plants and we shook our own foxglove seeds in special places and we picked up and sowed our own nasturtium seeds.”
Their rector, the Reverend David White, had this to say: “The children have always been the leaders of our environmental work. They began by implementing the Junior version of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan which is available on the website www.pollinators.ie. If parishes are wondering where to begin, consulting this website is a good place to start.”
A wonderful initiative to encourage eco–consciousness at a time of the COP–26 summit – one that earned the children a prime spot – on the cover of the November issue of our Diocesan Magazine!
