Bills Pass Final Stages at General Synod

Two Bills passed their final stages and were enacted at General Synod meeting online this afternoon (Wednesday December 2).

Bill No 1 provided for the inclusion in the Constitution of the Church of Ireland of provisions which are desirable for the purpose of ensuring charitable recognition for Church of Ireland bodies in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Bill No 2 provided for the incorporation of the Board of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, as a company limited by guarantee.

The Ven Leslie Stevenson who proposed Bill No 1 thanked the staff of Church House for interacting with with the Regulatory Authorities on the committee’s behalf and the Archbishop’s assessor for his advice and the Ven Barry Forde for his contribution.

Dean Morton, who proposed Bill No 2, expressed appreciation to staff of the RCB, in particular Dr Catherine Smith, and to William Prentice for their assistance.

The session was chaired by Bishop Michael Burrows, chairperson of the Bills Committee who noted that the process of General Synod acting as legislature had served the Church of Ireland well in the 150 years since Disestablishment.
