Garda advice on scam prevention

An Garda Síochána has provided the following advice to members of the public to help to prevent and report fraud, including scams, especially at this time.

Scammers continue to target vulnerable people during emergency situations, and householders are advised to be cautious when considering offers of help or any unexpected calls or other messages.

1. a three–page leaflet warning of three types of scams through which criminals are using the pandemic to exploit others (unsolicited messages, fraudulent calls for donations for ‘charitable’ causes, and fraudulent selling and trading of goods);

2. a 12–page guide to fraud prevention (jointly published with the Irish Payment Services Organisation, the Irish Banking Federation, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland);

3. two graphics which may be used on websites and social media platforms, to highlight invoice redirection fraud and CEO/CFO fraud (where the scammer impersonates an organisation’s Chief Executive or Chief Financial Officer).

Anyone who has been a victim of fraud or cyber–crime is encouraged to contact their local Garda station and listing of local crime prevention officers, who will be able to assist with this and other policing matters, is available here.
