Bishop on Tour

The Bishop of Cashel, Ferns & Ossory, the Rt Revd Michael Burrows, has decided to mark the 150th anniversary of Disestablishment by building on the well–established tradition of his peregrinations, those times when every three years or so he makes a rapid tour of the diocese, and meets lots of people, binding them all together over a period of days in a common cause. There are 150 places of worship in use in Cashel, Ferns & Ossory and the bishop proposed to visit every one of them, and during each visit to give a short talk on some interesting event that happened in each of the 150 years since Disestablishment.

However, due to Covid–19 restrictions, the Disestablishment 150 Tour  will be virtual and will take place between 12 November and 12 December  Originally planned as a road trip round the diocese the bishop will, due to lockdown, instead provide an online reflection about one year in each the past 150 as he ‘visits’ each of the 150 churches in his diocese over a period of 15 non–consecutive days. His progress can be followed and donations made via the diocesan website and Facebook page.

This is a sponsored event with a charitable purpose, and with an emphasis on the number 150. In the past the diocese, via the Bishops’ Appeal, has worked with Mothers’ Union and Feed the Minds to support projects chiefly concerned with women’s literacy. The plan therefore is to work again with Feed the Minds and MU in support of two exciting and effective literacy projects in two different contexts on the African continent. The aim is, in each of the 150 venues, to raise an average of 150 euro. If that average is achieved or even exceeded, there will be at least €22,500 to present to the two projects.

Tomorrow (Sunday), a Service of Remembrance will be broadcast on RTE 1 television and RTE Radio 1 Extra at 11 am, led by the National Bible Society of Ireland. The contributors will include Gillian Kingston, Former Lay Leader of the Methodist Church in Ireland and President of the National Bible Society of Ireland, and the Revd William Olhausen, Rector of St Matthias, Killiney–Ballybrack.  Philip McKinley and Sophia Wisdom will provide the music.

An Act of Remembrance will be held in the Church of St Teresa, Donore Avenue, tomorrow (Sunday) at 11.45, by kind invitation of the PP Fr David Corrigan, who will take part with the Rector, Canon Mark Gardner, of St Catherine & St James Donore Avenue. The 35th Dublin Donore Avenue St. Teresa’s Scout Group will be represented. Music will be provided by Feilimidh Nunan. The ceremony will be broadcast to the public by webcam on the website of St Teresa’s.

Due to  Covid–19 restrictions, the Annual Art Sale for St Philip’s, Milltown, in the Diocese of Dublin, will be held online this year.  The link to the online catalogue is here.  The catalogue can also be accessed via the parish website.  The catalogue will be on–line until next Tuesday.

The deadline for the ‘Why Safeguarding is Important’ video competition is fast approaching. Celebrating the launch of the new website, the competition is an exciting opportunity for parishes/youth groups and individuals from the Church of Ireland to spread the word about the importance of safeguarding and/or what this means to you. Entries should be submitted by 5pm on Friday, 13th November 2020, and all the details can be found in the news section of the website – www.ireland.anglican.org
