BISHOP MEHAFFEY CELEBRATES THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF HIS ORDINATION

The Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, paid tribute today to his episcopal colleague, Bishop James Mehaffey, at a service in St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry, to celebrate Dr Mehaffey’s 50th anniversary of his Ordination.
A representative congregation including Bishop James Hegarty, Bishop Edward Daly, Bishop Ken Good, representatives of the University of Ulster and clergy joined civic representatives of Londonderry in a service of Thanksgiving for the Ministry of Bishop Mehaffey stretching back for the last 50 years.
Archbishop Eames, who was succeeded by Bishop Mehaffey as Bishop of Derry and Raphoe in 1980, spoke of Dr Mehaffey as “a man of utmost integrity, foresight and pastoral excellence who had commanded the affection and respect of all sections of the Derry people.”
Dr Eames said:
“This ecumenical gathering is a fitting tribute to all those years of Christian example and leadership which Bishop Mehaffey has provided for so many people. Our friendship has extended back to our days as Rectors in Belfast. Here in this city and diocese the Bishop and his wife, Thelma, have been greatly loved and respected. As a Bishop, Dr Mehaffey gained the support and affection of Protestant and Catholic alike during years of suffering in the north west.”
To mark the occasion Bishop and Mrs Mehaffey have presented copies of the new Book of Common Prayer to the Cathedral and inaugurated a memorial organ scholarship in memory of their son, Philip.
