The Church in Society Committee of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland seeks to identify, contribute to, challenge and develop areas of living today where the mission of the Church can be active and the love of God shared. It does this through the publications of reports, resource materials and by developing projects that apply theological perspectives for public issues in a challenge to Christian living.
The Committee researches and reports on issues referred to it by the Standing Committee, the Archbishops, the Head of Synod Services and Communications, or other issues which may arise within the Committee. It submits a report on its work directly to the General Synod each year.
The Committee is divided into seven working groups as follows:
- Medical Ethics, Science and Technology
- Ecological and Environmental
- European Affairs
- Social Justice & Theology (NI)
- Social Justice & Theology (RI)
- Legislative & Political (NI)
- Legislative & Political (RI)
The Chairman of each of these panels may co-opt members with expertise in various fields as required. The panels, as well as the Committee itself, are authorised to issue statements or papers under their own name.
