GULLIVER'S TRAVELS RETURN TO ARMAGH

2nd August 2001

The Governors & Guardians of the Armagh Public (Robinson) Library are pleased to announce the safe return of the valuable first edition of Gulliver's Travels annotated by Dr Swift himself after the armed robbery which deprived the Library of it and many other items in December 1999. The Dean of Armagh and Keeper of the Library, the Very Rev. H. Cassidy, who travelled to Dublin to collect the Book paid tribute to the painstaking investigative work of the Garda Siochana in co-operation with the RUC which brought about this happy result and expressed his hope that the remaining items which include miniature books, medals and a Papal Bull of Clement XII would eventually be recovered.

As the Library is undergoing the final stages of its restoration and closed to the public it is hoped that the recovered books will be on display again when the official opening takes place in October. The Archbishop of Armagh Dr Robin Eames, who is Chairman of the Governors & Guardians, expressed his delight at the safe return of the Library's treasure.
