COMMUNITY IN DERRY TO EXPRESS SYMPATHY FOR US VICTIMS

12th September 2001

The Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Dr James Mehaffey, today announced that St Columb’s Cathedral in Derry will be the venue for an Inter-Church Service next Sunday, 16th September, at 3pm to express sympathy with the people of Washington and New York. Local church leaders from all denominations will be invited to take part in the Service.

A Book of Condolence will be opened in the Cathedral at 2pm today.

Bishop Mehaffey said: “We are appalled by the scale of the tragedy that has occurred in New York and Washington and our sympathy goes out to the bereaved families, the injured and those working in the emergency services.

“The purpose of our Service on Sunday is to provide an opportunity for people right across the community to express sympathy and solidarity with our friends in America.”
