BISHOP WELCOMES BEGINNING OF DECOMMISSIONING

24/10/2001

The Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Rt Revd Harold Miller has issued the following statement:

The beginning of decommissioning of IRA arms, ammunition and explosives is to be welcomed by all who seek for lasting peace in Northern Ireland. The whole way in which the devastation of terrorism is seen in the world has changed dramatically since September 11th, and it is vital that all who have been involved in paramilitary organisations make moves at this stage to prove that they are serious about living in a peaceful and democratic society. I urge loyalist and other republican paramilitaries to follow this example. Although this is only the beginning, it is a very important start and we as a society must continue to create the kind of environment and community in which violence and weapons have no place. Perseverance, patience and prayer have borne fruit in this new stage of the peace process and for this we thank God. Now we must work together to rebuild damaged trust, which will take many years - but it is the way of Christ and is the only foundation which will ensure a healthy future for our children and our children's children.
