The Church of Ireland today announced the completion of a £550,000
renovation scheme at Church House, Armagh.
The building was dedicated by the Archbishop of Armagh and Lady
Christine Eames declared the building open.
The foundation stone of Church House was laid in 1912 and the building
opened in 1913 at a cost of just over £5000. The money was raised from
private subscriptions, parish contributions, fetes and bazaars.
In 1997 it was agreed to upgrade the building as it faced increasing
demands as the administrative centre of the Diocese of Armagh and the
office of the Primacy.
The building has been extensively renovated and modernised during the
past year. The renovations include the re-design of the entrance area, the
provision of a lift for disabled access to the upper floor, waiting rooms
and kitchen facilities.
The Primate's rooms and the historic Synod Hall have also been
renovated and the fine collection of Episcopal portraits re-hung.
The work was financed by the diocese, contributions from the parishes
and grants from the Representative Church Body (RCB) as well as £50,000
from the sale of William Conor drawings which were displayed in the Dining
Room at Church House. |
