THEFT OF ARTEFACTS
FROM THE
ROBINSON LIBRARY, ARMAGH

Wednesday 15 December 1999    Soon after the Robinson Library, Armagh opened on Tuesday morning, 14th December, two masked and armed men walked into the building and tied up the assistant, Ms. Lorraine Frazer. They then stole many precious artefacts from their cases.    Miss Frazer was unhurt but badly shocked by the experience.    The Robinson Library is open to the public and used mainly for research. It is also open to allow interested members of the public access to some of the historic documents stored there which relate to the Church of Ireland.   There are so far no leads as to the perpetrators of this robbery but there is speculation that the articles may be destined for a private collector since they would be too well-known to be offered for sale.   The Library is offering a reward for the return of the stolen goods..   Members of the trade and the public are asked to be on the lookout for the stolen items. They are:
  • Armagh Corporation Maces made by Nathanael Stoughton, Silversmith, Dublin 1656
  • 2 Polyglot Bibles - parallel versions of the Bible in 8 languages
  • Our Lady of the Hours book - hand painted and printed in Paris in 1815

  • 13th century manuscript formerly belonging to the monastery of St. Mary, Pontiguy
  • Dutch Missal - 13/14th century
  • Papal Bull
  • Breeches Bible - 1611 edition of the Geneva Bible
